Top notch athletes dominate league
By SHERRY GACHE Correspondent "It's only fun before and after the game. During the game, there's no mercy — the kids are out there to win." These are the words of James Colzie, coach of the annual summer basketball league sponsored by the City of Coral Gables. Top high school and college basketball players comprise the eight teams that make up the competitive league. The team Bacchus has two top players: Billy Smith, a 1970 Coral Gables High School graduate, was the fourth round draft pick of the New York Knicks. Another player, Larry Black, was a 1972 Olympic Gold Medal winner in track. Coach Colzie has two brothers who play for the league, Neal and Anthony. Neal was a number one draft pick of the Oakland Raiders. That's how the team he plays for got the name of Raiders. The Raiders, comprised mostly of Coral Gables High graduates also has Anthony as one of its players. Anthony attends Albany State University on a basketball scholarship. The Grads is made up of Coral Park High School graduates. The team is led by Bobby Burke, now a college basketball player. Ron Nentwig, who plays for Biscayne College, is also a member of the squad. South Miami High graduates make up the Pros. One outstanding team member is Kim Honer, who led South Miami High's basketball team in scoring last year. The team named the Players are also Gables High graduates. The ex-Cav quintet features the Clifford brothers, Mark, Chris and Tom. All three attend college on football scholarships. The other three teams include players from three local high schools. The Snakes are from South Miami High, the Cas are from Coral Gables High and the Bulls are from Northwestern High's junior varsity team. "Every year the boys look forward to it," Colzie commented. "There's not one team that hasn't been here for the past five years. Win or lose, most teams keep the same pplayers year after year." Colzie, who officiates and partially supervises, has been with the league for half a decade "I like running it," he said. "I get a lot of support from . the kids and the City of Coral Gables." Colzie also is South Miami High's head basketball coach. According to Colzie, the top six teams are fairly equal, causing a high percentage of overtime games. "Last week, we had three ball games in overtime — mainly because these kids know each other." Spectators come from all over to watch the teams do battle in the Coral Gables High School gym, Monday through Thursday evenings at 6:30 and 7:30. During the last week of play, which will be Aug. 9 to 12, there will be a double elimination tournament. Only the top four teams in the standings play at this time. sports roundup J. Colzie
