Parrot, still under import quarantine, is stolen from CG family's backyard
Mrs. Manuel Menendez points out Felipe's empty roost Parrot, still under import quarantine, is stolen from CG family's backyard From Page 1 stolen about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 11. "It happened within 30 minutes," she recalled. "We heard Felipe crying and making sounds, but we thought he was trying to call my boy. "I went out into the back yard a half hour later and he had disappeared. His cries must have been his way of telling us someone was stealing him." Mrs. Menendez said they keep Felipe in the garage at night, but they let him roam free in the back yard during the day. She said she tried to chain him once, but he easily undid a link with his strong beak. "He cannot fly. He has something wrong with his wing," she said. "In fact, I was just going to take him back to the vet today to have it checked again." The only clue the Menendez family has in the theft was an occurence three weeks ago. "There are some men working on the unoccupied house next door, and one day we saw one of the construction workers trying to get Felipe's attentiom," said Prs. Menendez. "But when the dog barked and we came out of the house, he went away." What the family is also concerned about is that since they brought Felipe to Miami from their other home in Venezuela only last month, the parrot is still under a required 40-day quarantine. "Whoever has the bird should know about it," she said. She added that she has contacted the Agriculture Department, and that it is trying to help the family find the pet. Felipe could easily tear someone's finger off with his beak, said Mrs. Menendez but he is extremely gentle with people he knows. When it comes to food, however, the fickle parrot might befriend almost anyone. "Felipe hadn't had lunch the day he was stolen, so if the thief gave him a banana — which Felipe loves — he could take the bird wherever he wanted." She said the family is offering a reward to anyone who recovers Felipe. Mrs. Menendez can be reached at 448-4240.
