Pro-camper activists trying to muster forces
By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Dr. Richard Sena, a Coral Gables resident since 1946, has been forced to park his 23-foot motor home at his daughter's home in Westchester. He and his wife Dorothy, who have lived at 6201 Riviera Dr., for the past 20 years, feel they are being discriminated against by the city, which allows Sena's neighbors to park boats in their driveways. Since the city started enforcing an ordinance prohibiting the keeping of exposed recreational vehicles on private property, the Senas and many families like them are wondering what alternatives they have. "We've raised four children in this town of Coral Gables and now we have six grandchildren as well," said the retired general practitioner. "Having a family wagon helps us give our children love and affection. And the family that plays together, stays together." As the ordinance now stands, recreational vehicles can be parked in private yards only if they are enclosed and unoccupied. Boats and boat trailers, however, are not so restricted. When the Coral Gables Planning Board met June 21 to review the ordinance, it voted 5-0, with two members absent, to recommend that the city commission let the ordinance stand. Final dicussion of the issue will be aired at a July 27 commission meeting. "They permit boats and station wagons — they should permit family wagons as well, or come up with a good variance," said Dr. Sena. "We don't want to open this thing up and make a honky-tonk out of Coral Gables — we chose to live here because it's the City Beautiful. We just want to a solution that works," he said. Dr. Sena said he intends to be at the July 27 meeting, and that the Alfred Montero family, for one, will also be there to back him up. The Monteros, who live at 819 Cortes, and own a 23-foot Winnebago, have been fighting the issue vehemently for months. The Times-Guide published a story about them on June 23. Mrs. Montero, an outspoken activist, said she wants to organize a group of concerned Gables motor home owners to muster forces before the commission meeting. She said City Manager Martin Gainer told her that he has asked the police to stop enforcing the ordinance until the meeting, when the issue will supposedly be decided once and for all. In the meantime, Mrs. Montero is urging all concerned Coral Gables residents to call her between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. at her home, 448-3556, to help form a citizens action group. "We're going to fight this until the end," she vowed. Dr. Richard Sena, 26-year Gables resident . . . feels he and his camper are being discriminated against
