I received an amusing letter from a young woman named Carol, which I'd like to share with you. Carol wrote she had been following a weight control program for the past few months, and she was very pleased with the results. Then she wrote about how she lives in a renovated apartment building through which sound travels very easily. "About a month ago," she continued. "I was watching television when I heard a loud noise — almost like thunder. It came from somewhere in the building, but it passed after a minute and I forgot about it. "Two days later, at six in the morning, the same noise erupted. That evening I began a tour of the building to find out who or what was causing the noise. "I began with apartment A on the first floor. The couple who lives there said, yes, they'd been disturbed by the 'cannonballs,' as they called it, but had no idea where it came from. Just then, the sound struck again! It seemed to come from apartment C. Cautiously, we approached and knocked on the door. "Mrs. Conover, the sweet, middle-aged widow who lives there, blushed when we explained our mission. She invited us in and showed us an electric blender on her kitchen table. "'I've started a weight control program,' she said, 'and I make the most delicious artificially sweetened milkshakes in the blender with skim milk and ice cubes. The ice cubes do rattle a bit, but I had no idea how loudly!" "Mrs. Conover promised to confine her milkshakes to normal hours. "I've begun making milkshakes, too — blackberry is my favorite so far — and I just thought you'd like to know, A weight control program can have thunderous results!" MILK SHAKE RECIPE 1 cup skim milk 1/2 to 3/4 tsp. flavoring or extract artificial sweetener to taste 3 ice cubes Place all ingredients in blender and blend for about 30 seconds or until mixture froths.
