Needlepoint's fun ... profitable, too

By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer What started out as a bet many years ago has turned into a business and full-time hobby for Linda Lawrence. Linda, who owns Design Works Unlimited, Inc., a needlepoint shop at 13531 S. Dixie Highway, made a bet with a friend 17 years ago that she could needle-point a pillow. She admits the pillow wasn't very good, but after many years of practice, Linda's work has improved considerably. As a matter of fact, she is selling one of her works — a Jai-Alai player in action — for more than $3,000. "It was a dare but I became addicted right away and I haven't stopped doing it since," Linda said. "My first pillow was atrocious, but I keep it around to let others know that they can do good work if they keep at it." The self-taught artist, who now teaches needle-point to South Dade residents in her three-year-old shop, made the Jai-Alai piece in 10 weeks. "We are Jai-Alai fans and we go often, I really did it because I wanted to show that needlepoint doesn't necessarily have to represent still life," she said. Set on a black background, the Jai-Alai player on the canvas is seen at the moment he is thrusting the ball out of his basket. "When I started out I had to rely on every book I could get my hands on. There were no classes like there are now, so I had to teach myself," she added. Linda Lawrence watches ... student Jean Brandt at work Jai alai sports $3,000 price tag

Sewing for him can be fun, creative

needles and pins ... nadine wright You can get carried away with the idea of sewing for him. And, if you can sew for yourself, there's no reason why you can't put your creative needle to work on something for the "hims" you know — your husband, father, brother or special boyfriend. Lots of things that you might make for a man are even easier to sew than your own clothes. For instance, a pull-over T-shirt has just straight seams, easy hems and sleeve finishes. In fact, you may even start him sewing for himself. Lots of men are trying their hands at the sewing machine as well as a jigsaw. Shopping together for patterns and fabrics can be lots of fun; you can get some good ideas for what he'd like you to sew for him. If "his and hers" dressing is your thing, many patterns are designed for the two of you — T-shirts, vest, ponchos and pants. Combine colors and fabrics. The scraps from his T-shirt can be the sleeves for yours. Pants are not difficult to make if you take your time with the little details — perfectly squared-off belt loops, straight stitching on the zipper, super top-stitching on the pockets. Seersucker, denim, cotton prints and woven twills are all the rugged, casual fabrics that will make terrific pants. And, of course, the boys are wearing as many of the easy-fit fabrics as the girls. Can't wait to get going? Before you select the pattern and the fabric, it's important that you have the right measurements for him to be sure that you are starting with the right size and type pattern. A few quick measurements will give you the information you need. You will need a tape measure. Have him wear a lightweight shirt and pants that fit well. Measure carefully. Patterns are designed to fit three different body builds. For the growing boy, from size 7-12, chest sizes 26-30 inches. For the growing young man, sizes 14-20, chest sizes 32-36 1/2 inches. For men of average build, chest sizes 34-48 inches. When taking the measurements be sure to measure each area listed for a perfect fit: Height — when standing tall and straight. Neck — around the neck plus 1/2 inch for the neckband size. Chest — around the fullest part of the chest. Waist — around the natural waist. Hip (seat) — around the fullest part of the seat area. Sleeve length — from the center back neck base, along the shoulder to the bent elbow and down to the wrist.

In the summer, more than the temperature goes up. Here's something you can do about it.

You've probably noticed that the temperature isn't the only thing that rises in the summertime. There's also your electric bill. The cold hard fact as to why, is your air conditioner. Your air conditioning costs could very well account for half of your summer bill. For example, last year the average electric bill in April came to about $24.75. That average bill increased to $41.23 in July. In short, your summer bill increases primarily because you use more electricity to keep cool. But there are some things you can do to help keep your bill down while the temperature goes up. First and most importantly don't over-cool. Set your thermostat as close to 78 degrees as is comfortable for you. Weather strip your doors and windows. It's amazing how much warm air can seep in through even the slightest crack. Shade your windows with awnings, shutters or reflective film. Use light colors on your walls and roof to reflect the sun. The lighter the color the less heat the less your heat the less your bill during the summer months. Shade your airconditioning unit with shrubbery, but don't block the air flow. That way it'll operate more efficiently. At FPL we'd like you to know what can happen to your bill during the summer, because we'd also like you to know what you can do about it.
