Pioneer's home to be preserved
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer Before the late South Dade pioneer and conservationist A.H. "Doc" Thomas died last year, he made sure that his home and property bordering the City of South Miami would be preserved in all its natural beauty. One time owner of the OK Drug Store in South Miami, established in 1926, and later the manager of the OK Feed Store on South Dixie Highway, Thomas willed his home at 5530 Sunset Drive to the Tropical Audubon Society when he passed away in December, 1975. Set on two and a half acres, the home was built more than 40 years ago. It is located on a strip of unincorporated land between Coral Gables and the South Miami business district. Today, the old wooden home houses the Tropical Audubon Society's offices as well as the National Audubon Society's office, which heads six chapters from Palm Beach to Monroe counties. Eventually, the society plans to create an environmental center and library on the property, geared mostly to the young children in the community. The property, now overgrown with weeds and littered with beer cans and debris, will ultimately be turned into an environmental showplace with a variety of outdoor exhibits, according to Pete Quincey, Tropical Audubon Society president. To help attain that goal, members of the South Miami-Kendall Jaycees and students from Cub Scout Pack 483 and Boy Scout Troop 1776, will join forces Saturday, July 17, beginning at 9 a.m. to clean and clear the property. "We believe kids are not exposed early enough to their surroundings," Quincey said. "We hope to give them that exposure once the center is set up."
