Blood drive mounted for SD family
A two-day Blood Drive to benefit the Nick Salce family of 7720 SW 143rd St., will be held Tuesday, Sept. 7 and Wednesday, Sept. 8. The Salce's three sons Nick Jr., 25, David, 21, and Paul, 17, are hemophiliacs. David also has leukemia and is presently hospitalized in critical condition. Hemophilia is a hereditary condition in which blood fails to clot normally, causing prolonged bleeding from even minor injuries. The drive, being sponsored by Women's Aglow Fellowship and several local businesses which have donated their services and time, will be held at Accursio Realty, 1302 N. Flagler Ave. in Homestead on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wednesday drive will be held at the Kendall-Perrine Board of Realtors, 16001 SW 95th Ave., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The John Elliot Blood Bank will be setting up the mobile units each day. More donors Blood for children stricken with cancer is urgently needed by the American Cancer Society, said Dr. George Kleinfield, spokesman for the Dade County Unit. The blood unit will be set up in the auditorium of Variety Children's Hospital on Saturday, Sept. 11. Donors can be between the ages of 17 and 65, and must be in good health. Picnic The annual Dante Fascell Labor Day picnic will be held Monday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tamiami Park, 11201 SW 24th St. The Mark III Combo, a rock group "Snuff" and the St. Andrews Pipe band will be on hand to provide entertainment. There will be free hot dogs, watermelon, cold drinks, peanuts and cotton candy at the picnic, and everyone is invited to join in the fun. There will also be a watermelon eating contest, as well as other games and prizes.
