Garage sales, auctions help fill 'pad'

By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer Jill Branlund has her own "apartment" within her parents' Coral Gables home. Jack and Jean Branlund decided their 19-year-old daughter was entitled to a little privacy and a place to entertain her friends, and what better place than their own home? So, by using two bedrooms of the home, Jill has created a place where she can be independent, and still use the other main features of the family residence. A horticulture student at Miami-Dade Community College South Campus, Jill has used her artistic talents and green thumb to turn her private quarters into a warm and interesting pad. "I'm sold on this generation. All three generations in this house get along beautifully, but I think she should have a place where she can have her friends over and not be distrubed by us," said Mrs. Branlund. The peacock blue walls set the mood in Jill's place. Using items picked up at garage sales and auctions and combining them with family heirlooms and art work, she has given her special place in the home an antique look. A couch (that could double as a bed), rests directly against the wall of the room. An Oriental rug covers much of the floor space, decorated with antique red commodes and dressing table. Doubling as a coffee table is an all-wood coffin she bought at a Channel 2 auction. Not only is the piece handy to store things in, but it is also used to display plants and artifacts Jill brought back from a recent trip to Mexico. "Many of the things in this room I've picked up during my travels to South America, Mexico and across the country. There are also many things I've been collecting through the years." The ornamental pieces range from a large, wooden carved horse, to an old hand-painted jar full of rose buds her grandmother once collected. Beneath the glass top of one of the end tables is a collection of butterflies she netted in her backyard. Most of the furniture pieces in the room were owned by her grandmother — like the velvet covered chairs that are strategically scattered throughout the room. Mrs. Branlund made her See next page
