Water firm is granted rate hike
By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer In spite of citizen protest, the Dade County Water and Sewer Board granted General Waterworks a permanent rate increase of 16 per cent, or about $1 million in additional annual revenue, at a public hearing Thursday, Sept. 2, in South Miami City Hall. General Waterworks — Dade County's largest private water and sewer company — serves large areas of Coral Gables and South Miami. The 16 per cent permanent increase includes an eight per cent interim hike granted by the board July 14. The utility had asked for a 50 per cent hike. The new rates will go into effect by the end of September and should appear on consumers' October bill, according to Larry Fresh, district manager of the utility's Coral Gables office. However, the increase cannot, he said, yet be translated into dollars and cents. Only a handful of consumers showed up for the public hearing, and one of them, Kendale Lakes resident Joyce Cotter, claimed the public was not properly notified. "The hearing was originally set for Sept. 20, and many of the consumers weren't made aware of the change," she said. "That's why so few showed up today . . . at the July 14 meeting, the auditorium was nearly full. "This is like a sneak preview — all the issues will be resolved and we'll have nothing to say about it," she added angrily. Fresh, however, said the Water and Sewer Board notified major newspapers and radio stations of the change, twice once in August and again last week.
