Flashing blue light may mean blue star
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer | If a Coral Gables police officer stops you for doing what you thought was a courteous driving act, fear not. He is more likely to hand you a star than a traffic ticket. The law has always punished the wrongdoers. Now Coral Gables wants to reward its law-abiding citizens. Thursday, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the city's police department, launched the Safe Driver Award Campaign, which officially got under way Friday, Sept. 3. Coral Gables police officers will be handing out red, white and blue star decals, about the size of a silver dollar, to all courteous and defensive drivers spotted. "This is a positive safety plan to save lives, prevent property damage and encourage courteous and safe driving in our community," said Les Perkins, chairman of the chamber's Parking and Traffic Committee. The first time a safe driver is stopped, he will be given a red star. The second time he will be given a white one, the third and last time, he will receive a blue star. These are to be attached to the rear windshield of the vehicle involved. Upon receiving the third star, the safe driver will be given an award or plaque at a special Chamber ceremony. "One of the major holiday seasons is coming up this weekend and this is the perfect time to get this program underway," said a Coral Gables police spokesman.

DAN PAUL SAYS... "JOE GERSTEN SLUGGED IT OUT WITH THE GUYS WHO WERE TRYING TO SOAK DADE'S TAXPAYERS. HE HAS EARNED RE-ELECTION".
Here's a statement from Dan Paul, frequent critic of wasteful government and arrogant officeholders: "Rep. Joe Gersten slugged it out with the guys who were trying to soak Dades taxpayers. He has earned re-election. Time after time he stood up against enormous pressure, and let his voice be heard for the people he represents. If the people of Dade County had a few more legislators like Joe Gersten representing them in Tallahassee, we'd be a lot better off."
