Local Methodists unite for Christian growth school
By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer The annual South Dade School for Growing Christians — sponsored by eight United Methodist churches in the Perrine, Homestead, Leisure City and Florida City areas — will be held Sept. 19-23. Courses offered will include the "The Gospel of Mark;" "Evangelism — How To;" "Youth and Workers with Youth;" and "Stewardship and the Committment Plan." The Gospel of Mark class will be offered Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. at Peace United Methodist Church, 12755 Quail Roost Dr. It is the first time that morning classes have been offered in the school. Evening sessions for all classes will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Homestead, 622 N. Krome Ave., from 7:30 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. Classes begin Sunday, Sept. 19, and the first class will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. at the Homestead church. Host pastors are Roy V.I. Harris, of Peace United Methodist Church, and T. Newton Wise, of First United Methodist Church of Homestead. "The school is an annual event, and it's intended to provide Christian education and learning experience in several different areas," Pastor Harris said. "This year, we're experimenting by having the school at two different churches, and starting morning classes for those who might not be able to attend at night. "The school is open to anyone, regardless of religious affiliation, from teenagers to senior citizens." The pastor said when the school was held last year — at Silver Palm United Methodist Church in South Dade — nearly 200 people participated. "We're hoping for an even better attendance this year, with the morning classes. Last year, participants were pulled primarily from Homestead churches, but this year we're trying to attract people from the Perrine and Cutler Ridge areas as well." United Methodist churches actively taking part in the school include Cutler Ridge; First, Homestead; Florida City; Peace; Perrine-Peters; Redland Community; Silver Palm; and Leisure City-Trinity. Pastor Harris said in addition to the South Dade School for Growing Christians, the United Methodist Church has two other religious education programs in Dade County — the Christian Enrichment School and the Lay School for Theology. "With the three of them, we have a complete year round Christian education program," he said. The Gospel of Mark class, which will be taught by Pastor Edwards of the Cutler Ridge Church, should be of interest to almost anyone, said Rev. Harris. The course will emphasize the person of Jesus Christ as the measure of all things. "The key to human dignity, hope and meaning lies in the fact that each of us is the object of God's personal love," Pastor Edwards said. "This fact demonstrated in Jesus Christ is the Good News I am called upon to announce. "All who hear and believe the announcement are made immeasurably wealthy and are called to share this wealth by deeds of concern and words of love."
Rev. Harris
