Lions & Bulbs / They'll Light Up Town Monday

The Coral Gables Lions begin their 8th annual light bulb sale Monday. From six o'clock in the until nine at night the Lions will roam, house to house in the Gables, selling bags of bulbs (retail value same as in a store) to raise money for their work with the blind and other charitable endeavors. ast Wednesday, during a meeting at the Coral Gables Country Club, Lion President Bill May, in an effort to top last year's $11,000 campaign twisted the Lions' Tail in an unprecedented fashion. He invited Joe Collier — a Kiwanian—to tell the Lions a thing or two about 'how to sell light bulbs.' Only time will tell about his tips but this is what he told them: "Don't say, 'you don't want any light bulbs do you?' It's like handing the guy the answer to a question before you ask it. "Get attention. Knock on the door and roar—'This is Leo, your light bulb lion!' "Put your yellow and purple jacket on backwards so customers can see your identification. And if they don't call the man in the white coat—go on with your sales pitch. "Be brief, to the point. Start with, 'how many bags do you want?' I have 150 with me but I can get more.' "Don't stick your foot in the door. Too many salesmen have been crippled that way. Use a rock. "Put something in the prospect's hands. Keep them holding something so they can't slam the door in your face. "If they want to donate $2 rather than carry the bag of bulbs to the closet where last year's bulbs remain unopened don't argue. Take it. "Recognize obstacles. The biggest one usually encountered is, 'I don't have any money.' There is no solution for this problem. Run. "If they ask for white and colored bulbs—clam up. "Close the sale by getting the money. "Say goodbye pleasantly. You'll be back next year. But hurry on. There's lots of ground to cover. "Lots of people to call on. And a lot of money is needed for the work to be done. "Good luck Lions. Light up the town!"
