Double Plane Jeopardy Thursday, October 12, 1961 THE CORAL GABLES TIMES 3

Fascell Almost Isn't Here

By JOE C. MORRIS Correspondent Dante B. Fascell, the district Congressman, is lucky to be alive. The jet on which he was returning from Italy recently ran off the end of the runway at New York's Idlewild Airport but landed upright in the mud. The plane's hydraulic system had failed. The passengers shortly brushed death a second time as the bus in which they were being transported to the terminal was led onto a runway on which another jet was about to land. "The noise of that other airplane was more frightening than running off the runway," Fascell said. "It was as close a call as I ever want to have and not actually have to go." Congressman Fascell and 12 members of the House of Representatives were part of the official U.S. delegation attending the Centennial Celebration of the Unification of Italy. They arrived in Turin, Italy, Sept. 21, to view a world trade exposition commemorating the year-long observance. A century ago, the Italian people, guided by such leaders as Garabaldi and Cavour, revolted against the tyrannical kingships and city states all over their land. And in much the same fashion as America, they created a republic with a constitutional form of government. Fascell, appeared physically fit and rested, in spite of the longer-than-usual legislative session in Washington and his recent trip. Turning to the subject of the trade exposition, Fascell said: "We really stole a march on the Communists, this time." He slammed the table hard with his hand. "In the United States exhibit at the exposition we showed the social and scientific advancement of mankind the past 100 years. "We had, for instance, a schoolroom, complete with blackboards, desks, and books. "American teachers conducted normal classes with Italian children. And they demonstrated advanced methods of teaching using television and other electronic equipment. "The warm feeling generated by the smiles and enthusiasm of our personnel stole the show from the Reds. "In contrast, Russia had dull, dry and highly technical equipment in their exhibits. It was well made but of interest only to technologically skilled people. "They did have a movie, at the entrance to their exhibit area, attempting to show a wonderful way of life at some ski-resort in the mountains. But that was the only light note in their entire display. "The picture the Russians put across to me, and I'm sure to everyone else outside their own border was, "'We have no time to smile, we're too busy making things, and... here are the machines and tools to prove it." "We must fight the Communists everywhere and every way we can," Fascell boomed. "I want to be sure we are doing everything we can to win. And this American exhibition, in this foreign country, at this time and in this particular way, is one time the United States is winning over the Russians-hands down!" "Some of the things I learned on this trip, I think are important for our people to know," he said. "The Communists have 141 of the 596 seats in the Italian parliament. That almost 25 per cent Red representation. "The underdeveloped or non-industrial section of Italy is in the south. The north is much better off economically. Yet about 70 per cent of the Communists are in northern Italy. "The reason for that, in Italy, is that they do not have multiple clubs and organizations such as in America. "Their best organizations are the labor unions. And they are a particular target for the Reds.
