Dr. Strain in Pulpit Doctor Examines Religious Body, Finds Myopia, Trace of Anemia

THE PASTOR of University Baptist Church, Dr. Rupert Coleman, congratulates his fill-in last Sunday, medical Dr. Richard Strain (right). (Photo by Joe C. Morris) By JOE C. MORRIS Correspondent "I have frequently been troubled by the vagueness of the Christian enterprise, and the church as applied to the average Christian lay member of that church. "The lack of any specific, spiritual objectives in the religious life of most of us, I believe, is causing a floundering progress of the Christian enterprise over the world." Spoken from the pulpit of University Baptist Church last Sunday, those words were not those of the pastor but of a laymen, Dr. Richard E. Strain. Dr. Strain, a Gables neurological surgeon, was for two years a medical missionary in China and also spent three years in India. "Perhaps," he told the Baptist congregation on Layman's Day, "we need a three or five year spiritual plan, and organize our church members into little groups or cells for fellowship, study and spiritual progress, as the early Christians so successfully did—and as the Communists are doing today." Dr. Strain had this to say about home training: "China with her commune system is trying to destroy the home. "Some in America have already destroyed the home. They have made it a filling station for food and a bed for sleep, but little else. "It is inconceivable to me that we can expect our children to morally and religiously stand against the Godless, well educated, but wraped materialism of Communism — unless in our homes we daily reaffirm our enthusiastic belief in our moral principles. "The Communists have long recognized the importance of education. Their children receive instruction in astheistic communism — at home and at school — whether they want it or not." Pointing out that the founding fathers did not wish a State Church, he reminded that neither did they intend to leave religion or religious training out of the lives of it's future citizens. "Unless American laymen 'wake up' and realize that desirable citizens of a democratic state, well educated in the whys, hows and wherefores of democratic processes, religious or otherwise, do not 'just happen' but must be taught — then the world may well enter another dark age under Communistic denomination."

They Want 5c An Hour For Parking

A group of merchants along the south side of Miracle Mile near Le Jeune Road has asked the City Commission to lower the parking rate in the attendant parking lot on Andalusia avenue to five cents an hour. The Commission has indicated it will wait to gain a bit more experience with the new rate before making still another change. The rate was changed recently to 10 cents for the first hour, 10 cents for the second hour and a nickel for each additional hour thereafter. Initially the rate was set at 15 cents for the first hour.
