Deaths in the Gables Robert Weed, Designed Many UM Buildings

Services for Robert Law Weed, designer of many prominent University of Miami and area buildings who died Sunday at his Coconut Grove home, were held Wednesday at Plymouth Congregational Church. He was 64. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Mr. Weed, a graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology, served in World War I as a coast artillery officer. The Pennsylvania native came to the Miami area in 1919 and opened an office in 1922. Mr. Weed received many awards for his architectural contributions. He was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects; past president of the Florida Association of Architects; member of the Florida Engineering Society and former member of the State Board of Architect Examiners. Mr. Weed was also active in civic affairs. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude L; two sons, Robert L Jr., and Richard C.; a daughter, Mrs. James E. Browne Jr.; two grandsons, all of Miami, and a brother and sister.

Rutherford, 56, Attorney, Was Buried Tuesday

Funeral services for attorney Vivion B. Rutherford, 56, were held Tuesday at Combs North-east Chapel. Burial followed in City Cemetery. Mr. Rutherford, who died Saturday, lived at 4710 San Amaro Dr. He had been active in political circles in Miami and served the communities of Miami, Miami Beach and Dade County. Mr. Rutherford was city attorney for Miami Beach seven years, assistant county solicitor for nine years and special counsel for Miami more than four years. He served in the Navy as a commander during World War II, was a member of the Rod and Reel Club and the Ocean Bay Lodge Scottish Rite. Mr. Rutherford, a graduate of Vanderbilt University, belonged to Lambda Chi fraternity. Survivors include his wife, Sally Reeder Rutherford and a daughter, Sally.

Pancake's Stripes OK

M & M Pancake House, 866 Ponce de Leon Blvd. is going to keep its red and white candy stripes on the north side of the building. City Commissioner voted last week to approve the red and white stripes on a year to year basis to ensure that appearances will be kept up. The restaurant had already received approval for the colorful striping on its awnings, but not for the side and tiling. Zoning Board members had split 3-2 in approving the side stripes.

LOW TIRE BID

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., has been awarded a two-year contract to furnish the City of Coral Gables with bus tires. The company was low bidder among five firms with a bid of .00924 cents per bus mile.
