Vera Talks, Knits and Does - Many Are the Beneficiaries
By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor Vera (Mrs. William) Cox can do two things at once. She can knit and watch TV. "But you have to be good at knitting," she said, "Or the Red Cross won't trust you with the woolen yarn." However, the Red Cross does trust Vera. She is chairman of the American Red Cross Chapter, 5020 Biscayne Blvd., and will be on hand Tuesday to welcome friends of the chapter and the public to the traditional 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. coffee. This will be Vera's sixth year as chairman, and she has no idea of retiring from that or any of her affiliations. She tells us she had just joined the new Civil Defense Woman's Auxiliary of which Mrs. Raymond L. Evans, 1037 Castile Ave., is the organizer. She is also a member of the advisory committee, School of Nursing at Lindsey Hopkins School, and of the "WAVS," Veterans Administration Volunteer Service. Vera, who was president of the Coral Gables Woman's Club (1946-1948), was named Dade County's Woman of the Year in 1957, and will proudly show you her scrapbook of her pictures and write-ups. She was in uniform then (same as our picture). She is presently chairman of public health for the Dade County Federation of Women's Clubs. Vera, widow of a United States Naval officer who died in 1952, lives in the home at 5737 Riviera Dr. It is a Spanish-type two story. Vera greeted us at the arched front door, leading from a small stoop into the living room. She was in "uniform" shorts and a blouse, keeping cool. We sat in the TV room, which really is the dining room with a ceiling-high, built-in china closet filled with silver. We both sat cosily on a sofa with a wide window behind us looking into a tiny back yard with detached garage behind. We mentioned the view through a door leading into a long narrow screened porch with white reed furnishing, and colorful Spanish tile floor. "The furniture," she said, "was made by the prisoners of the Bilbao prison in Manila." The reed, she continued, is fashioned under water entirely by hand by the prisoners, and made into the chairs and sofas. A matching, same - size porch is on the second floor, opening into the bedrooms. Vera lives among treasures she and Bill brought back on his many missions for the Navy in foreign countries. MRS. COX The pieces blend in well with this high-ceilinged home, now with modern windows and recently-installed tile window sills. She pointed proudly to the stair, with its wide steps leading to the first landing, then on up. "I painted it myself," she said (a blue matching the walls). Vera says her grandfather, an Italian, born in Germany, was a [?]. Vera's office is her pantry, a two step up from the TV room. It has cupboards to the ceiling and kitchen beyond. There on the space between upper cupboard and lower, is her telephone, and typewriter, and a high stool handy, for comfort. Soon a pretty girl was standing at the door, cup of coffee and her mail in hand, and Vera introduced us to her sister, Frances Hively, who lives with her. Frances is supervisor of information at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Also with Vera are her sister-in-law, recently widowed, Vara Vicvellio, and niece Vivarie. had blond hair and blue eyes. As for Vera and her everbusy hands, she showed us the sweater she was knitting, a brown wool pull-over with V neck. It was perfect as to its form and fit. We asked, "How many have you done?" "Oh," she asnswered. "I really have lost count, dozens, I would say. They are for the veterans."
