Defeats Steve Brody / Cole to Lead CG Juniors
By LEE SANDLER Herald Correspondent Coral Gables High student, George Cole, defeated Steve Brody 623 votes to 462 as Brody ran for reelection to class presidency. The contest was for Junior Class. Other results of the run-off elections held on May 23 saw Ronni Wekster defeat Larry Davison 576 to 449 for vice president and Kathy Lewistoppe Jane Lang 725 to 346 for treasurer. Janice Dutcher had already won election as secretary last week as she garnered a majority of 702 votes in the primary election. Chemistry teacher Walter D. Bowlby has continued work to prepare Gables High for a good showing in next year's Westinghouse Science Talent Search Competition. There are now two teams at the school, one composed of juniors and the other of sophomores. Each is preparing to enter the competition in their senior years. The junior Westinghouse team recently elected officers for next year. Those who will serve are Mike Zinner, director; Loraine Lieberman, girl's director; David Groves, boy's captain; Mike Saltzman, boy's co-Captain; Michael-Ann Russell, girl's-captain; and Anne Bornstein, girl's co-captain. The sophomore team also elected officers for next year. They are boy's director, Alan Keith; girl's director, Judy Abrams; boy's captain, Richard Milburg; boy's co-captain, David Morris; girl's captain, Helene Stoler; and girl's co-captain, Marilyn Seitlin. Although the sophomores will not officially enter the Westinghouse competition for two years, 14 of them have already started doing research work in laboratories throughout the county. The third of series of four annual award assemblies was held at the school on May 10. Among the outstanding awards presented were the First National Bank of Coral Gables Scholarship to William Foster, the Science and Math Honor Society Award to Michael Machtey and Jack Catlin, Arion Foundation Music Award to Karen Valentine and Vic Fishman. National Secretaries Association Award went to Judy Futter and Thomas P. Campbell Memorial Award for second year French student went to Stephen Dubrow. Theta Sigma Phi award for outstanding girl in journalism went to Rusti Hausman and Rochelle Draizer won the Edwin Cook Memorial Award in music. The Harry N. Rath Science Scholarship was presented to Robert Frank and Mark Rollins was named as one of the two students in the county to win the Dade County Council of Parent-Teacher Association Scholarships. Patricia Hall won the Barnard College Book Award for outstanding junior girl and Edith Ann Genung was awarded the International Association of Machinists Scholarship. This scholarship is $1,000 a year for four years to any school of the recipients choice. The program also highlighted the naming of the 13 Westinghouse winners, 12 Silver Knight nominees, and three National Merit Scholarship winners. The school newspaper, the High Lights received a plaque for first place in the Mental Health contest. The prize was earned by devoting an issue of the school newspaper to articles and letters concerning mental health.

Among the organizers of a new national bank at SW 27th Avenue and 7th Street is Fred B. Hartnett, president of University Federal Savings and Loan Association here. * * * Beginning this week on page 3, realtor Alma Bir starts a series of ads designed to cover a multitude of topics that are of interest and importance to the home owner. * * * John E. Milloway of 648 Sevilla Ave. has been awarded the MAI designation by the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. Milloway has been appraising real property here in Dade County for the last 11 years when he was associated with the late Walter L. Harris. After Harris' death in 1956, he formed the partnership of Milloway and Coulter with William H. Coulter with offices in the Ingraham Building, Miami. * * * Gary Moore, brother of Max Moore, the WCKT newsman, has joined the staff of Studio M as public relations man. He is a graduate of the University of Indiana with 15 years' theater experience. * * * Bob Montell of the House of Montell has started a Saturday afternoon dance party at the El Bolero on Coral Way. In the La Fiesta Room from 1 to 3 p.m., there's champagne dancing, a feature Montell believes will come back strong in this area. * * * Three life insurance representatives are listed in the 1962 Roster of the Million Dollar Round Table of the National Association of Life Underwriters. Air-Conditioned Buses Due Here Next Week
Ten new buses, costing $300,000, are scheduled to arrive in Coral Gables from Michigan Monday and Tuesday. Transportation Director Lee Davis is expected to arrive Monday with five of the buses and another five are to arrive Tuesday. Seven of the sleek new buses are air conditioned and will be used primarily on the Coral Gables to downtown Miami run. The 40-passenger buses will be put into operation as soon as they have been checked.
