YOUTH CENTER ACTIVITIES
The Chess club meets at the Youth Center every Monday and Friday from 7-11 p.m. This club is open to all. BATON The Youth Center was represented at Curtis Park last Friday evening, competing in the 1962 Florida State Open Baton Twirling Corps Championships. The "Gabelettes" won the State Junior championship in the class "B" division, while the "Gableaires" went on to win the state open title in the juvenile class "A" division. Both teams were directed by Bill Allen. The All Stars, including Youth Center teams and Palmetto, coached by Allen, won eight out of nine state titles, including the Grand Championship. JUDO The Judo Team again made a most impressive showing in the All Miami International, Judo Tournament held last Sunday in Cutler Ridge. The team captured three first places, two seconds and one third place. Three months ago, the judo team made an excellent showing in the Florida A.A.U. state championship matches. They won two first places, three seconds and two third places. Recently promoted to Green-Belt was Thomas Parker, 1328 Sorolla Ave. Bruce Brown, Black Belt judo expert, holds classes in our gym Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 P.M. Anyone interested in Judo may register at the office. CHESS The Coral Gables Chess Championship will be held June 8, 9, and 10. Registration is Friday, June 8, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. TEEN COUNCIL The Teen Council has donated $425 for the purchase of track equipment. This donation has made it possible to offer high jump, broad jump, pole vault, discus and shot put events in its track program. Track workouts are held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 6 p.m. The Teen - Council earned this money by sponsoring the Friday night dances in our gym with an admission fee of 15 cents. THE ARTS Adult classes in oil painting, ceramics and sculpturing ended May 3, but will resume again June 1st. Youth Center art instructor, Mrs. Pera Chiofolo is spending a month in Mexico and will return with new ideas in folk lore arts for both adults and children. Registration for adult classes can be made now for the new session, beginning June 1st. GYMNASTICS The Greater Miami Recreation Executives presented a gymnastics workshop in the gym. The first session was held May 11. It consisted of explanation, demonstration and participation in a tumbling program which includes activities, equipment and routines and stunts. BASEBALL Success is the password of baseball teams. Eager to see the baseball program in full swing, a group of supporters has gone all out in showing their confidence in the participating teams by purchasing complete uniforms for each of them. The boys, who are between six and 16 years of age, are coached by Dave Godding, Bill Hunt, Collie Hunt, Phil Olson, Joe Atwood, Frank G. Liozzo and Moe Pringle.
Memorial Tribute Slated Wednesday
In signing the annual proclamation designating next Wednesday, as Memorial Day, Mayor Robert L. Searle called on all citizens to cooperate in appropriate commemoration of our honored dead. A holiday will be observed by City departments, the Chamber of Commerce, banks and business places generally. Memorial Day services will be held at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center at 8 p.m. delivered by Commissioner Franklin Evans. Past Commander E. W. Deering of Coral Gables Post 98, American Legion, points out that attendance at these observance has shown an annual increase in recent years. "Never in our nation's history has there been greater need for patriotic affirmations," Deering emphasized; "I hope to see the auditorium filled to the doors with Gables citizens eager to do honor to those who made it possible for us to celebrate this day in ease and safety."
Members of the Coral Gables Board of Architects huddled with the City Commission Friday morning to discuss the possibility of having an engineer on the board and the role of the board. No change in the composition of the board is expected after the meeting. Commissioner Franklin Evans had brought up the desirability of having an engineer sit on the board.

Grove Is Interested In Sunrise
The Coconut Grove Civic Club has sent a resolution to the City of Coral Gables supporting the Sunrise Harbour Association's recommendation that the City hire planners and work with Miami and Metro in developing Sunrise Harbour. Claiming a membership of 700, Lester Pancoast, president, pointed out that a part of Sunrise Harbour subdivision lies in the Coconut Grove section of Miami. The Sunrise Harbour Association recently filed suit against Coral Gables in an attempt to block construction of a 28-unit, two story apartment along Edgewater Drive. Creation of a density problem is claimed in opposing the apartment.

Jerry Carter Says: Thanks Folks!
I want to thank all the good citizens of Florida, especially the ladies and their organizations, as well as the men and theirs, and also the members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Young Democrats for the magnificent support they gave me in the first primary, and solicit their activity and vote in my behalf in the coming run-off primary. In the first primary Jerry Carter LEAD In 60 out of the State's 67 Counties! 40 Counties each gave Jerry Carter MORE votes than all other opponents combined! 20 Counties each placed Jerry Carter FIRST with a big majority in each of these Counties. JERRY CARTER has saved the Florida Residents nearly... $200,000,000. ON ELECTRICITY, GAS AND PHONE BILLS. A PROVEN RECORD NOT PROMISES TALLAHASSEE AREA — Jerry Carter was directly responsible for refunds to the customers of Southeastern Telephone Company in North Central and Northwest Florida of nearly $1 million. SOUTH FLORIDA — Four (4) separate rate reductions on Florida Power and Light Co. were ordered by the commission in 1957 reducing electric light rates $4,725,000 annually. Another $200,000 in '60, another 61⁄4 million in 1960 and another for $2 million. Total nearly $15 million in this vast area alone. PENSACOLA — The Commission ordered rate reductions of $257,501 annually — went into effect January 1958. (Gulf Power Co.) JACKSONVILLE — Refunds in gas amounted to $105,727 (Jacksonville Gas Co.) MADISON — Commissioner Carter brought before the commission the phone company serving Madison, into a public hearing on rates and an inadequate and inefficient service. Charges were cut ONE HALF! This action spurred other phone companies in the state to install more modern and efficient equipment under the supervision and through the cooperation of your Commissioner Jerry Carter and the Commission. ALL FLORIDA — Reduced rates for natural gas have gone into effect all over the state by order of the Commission. Jerry Carter's first act was to urge investigation and it resulted in the first statewide 10 percent reduction of exchange phone charges; and abolished a 50c per month charge for desk and hand phones.
