Have We Horse-Age School For Outer Space? Exec Asks

50 Gables Seniors Honored "Does the nine or ten-month, two-semester attendance pattern of American education fit the scientific age?" This question was asked today, Thursday, by an executive of one of America's leading corporations. Speaking at a civic leaders' luncheon sponsored by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce in recognition of the scholastic achievements of 50 honor students from Coral Gables High School, R. H. Venn, vice president of the Humble Oil - Refining Co.'s Southeast Esso Region, questioned whether a free society, "in competition with one determined to destroy it, can afford to continue a pattern of school attendance which evolved to satisfy our education needs in our agricultural period?" Also honored was Principal Harry Rath, retiring this year from Gables High School which he has directed the 12 years of its life. The luncheon was held at the CGCC. Stressing the marked rise of cooperation between businessmen and educators in the last 10 years, Venn called for "some controlled experiments . . . to determine whether the 9 months school year exists because like Topsy, 'it just growed' or because it really is the optimum in terms of educator's goals and society's needs." Citing such experimentation as only one of hundreds of ways in which educators and businessmen "should become more deeply 'involved' in collaborative projects," Venn said that business has a responsibility to support the educators continuing efforts to better adjust the educational process to meet the current needs of business and other segments of society. "Businessmen must invite the educator into the business world," he said, "not to tour plants or to 'explain' business", but to "devise ways and means of working jointly on the problem of improving the adaptation of the educational process and subject matter to these needs." In commenting on the dependency of modern business upon the educational system, Mr. Venn noted "several areas in which graduates are less than adequately prepared for real participation in the national life." Among these he listed economics, general science, reading and communications skills, political and governmental structure and "absolute sense of moral and ethical values." "It is in these areas," he said, "that with some curricular modification education, and the product it sends to the business world, could make even greater contributions to business, to the individual and to the general society." Venn warned against merely crying out for new courses to be added to the already crowded curriculum. "The educator," he said, "cannot be expected to change merely for the sake of change, but only when change is indicated to be of value. R. H. VENN . . . take a look

Map Suit Holds Fast; Trial Seen

Efforts to have a map infringement suit tossed out of Federal District Court failed Monday when the court denied another motion to dismiss. "I've felt all along that it was just a question of time," said L. W. Larson, local map-maker who claims the City, Chamber of Commerce, Parker Art Printing and another guide map distributor, John Giffen, copied one of his maps illegally. This was the third time Larson had filed the suit through his attorneys, Pruitt and Pruitt. Previouslyt he suit has been dismissed. The defendants have 20 days to file an answer. Larson said he is certain of victory now that the case is apparently headed for trial. The original suit was filed back on Aug. 8, 1961.

FLAGLER PHARMACY

FAST - EFFICIENT - ETHICAL PRESCRIPTION SERVICE ★ AT LOWEST DISCOUNT PRICES ★ ASK YOUR DOCTOR MIAMI - Elmer Whalley has transformed his Flagler Pharmacy into a sleek, lean discount-type - yet professional drug operation. "The drastic change was made because of the trend of the times," Mr. Whalley declared. Changes in the Flagler operation included slicing the 2400-square-foot store in half, ridding it of a myriad of gondolas containing items not related to the ethical pharmacy. The main change, according to Mr. Whalley, and one on which the store will try to build a city-wide image, is low price. Copying new pricing policies from two successful discounters here, the front of the store offers an across-the-board discount price policy. The prescription department promises "rock bottom prices" according to circulars given out to customers of the store. The store also cut former lengthy hours to 9 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. and closed all day Sunday and holidays. To make a profit in this type of operation, Mr. Whalley buys in as great a volume as possible, and he expresses the belief that the public has been made so price-conscious that the "discount apothecary" will garner the prescription and drug business of the area.
