Cuspilich Jr. arrived on the scene shortly after 3 p.m., but Dr. Forastiere informed them that Claugherty was beyond help. Gables Rotary To Greet District Governor Farrar
The Coral Gables Rotary Club will be host on Friday, Nov. 4, to Cecil S. Farrar, governor of the 699th District of Rotary International, who is making his annual official visit. Farrar is manufacturer's representative of the Case Manufacturing Corporation — plumbing fixtures, and is a charter member and past president of the Rotary Club of Delray Beach. He served as a governor's representative and organized the Rotary Club of Boca Raton. He is one of 267 District Governors supervising the activities of more than 10,600 Rotary clubs which have a membership of nearly 500,000 business and professional executives in 116 countries throughout the world. Similiar Activities Wherever Rotary clubs are located, President Richard Strain asserted in discussing the Governor's visit, their activities are similiar to those of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables because they are based on the same general objectives — developing better understanding and fellowship among business and professional men, promoting community - betterment undertakings, raising the standards of business and professions, and fostering the advancement of understanding, good will and peace among all the peoples of the world. Growing Organization Each year, this worldwide service organization continues to grow in numbers and strength, President Strain added. During CECIL S. FARRAR the past fiscal year, 405 new Rotary clubs were organized in 47 countries, bringing the total number of Rotary clubs to an all-time high of more than 10,600, and five geographical regions were added to Rotary membership roster — Aden, French Polynesia, New Guinea, Ryukyu Islands and San Marino. The Rotary Club of Coral Gables meets at noon at the Coral Gables Country Club.
Failure To Pay Collection Bill Means A Lien
Failure to pay garbage and trash collection bills will result in liens being established against property, the City of Coral Gables Waste Billing Division warned last week. The lien policy was adopted several months ago after a few delinquents — some of them owing for several years — had been haled into Municipal Court. City Commissioners decided to go the lien route when faced with the possibility of having to put recalcitrant taxpayers in jail. Under the recently adopted policy, delinquents have liens placed against their property which must be paid before the property can be sold or transferred. Fees become delinquent 30 days after the due dates. The semi-annual fee of $16.50 for single-family residences is due Oct. 1 and April 1 of each year. The annual rate, $30, is payable during October. Apartment, duplexes, hotel, commercial and industrial fees, are due on the first of October, January, April and July. The bills may also be paid annually during the month of October.
Gables High Notes | Nixon Has Slight Edge In Poll
By LESLIE GROSS On Monday, Oct. 24, Coral Gables High School debaters participated in Southwest High School's invitational debate tournament. Also competing in the series of debates were Hialeah High School, Miami High and Southwest. Led by the duos of Dinsmore and Schuster, and Zack and Magida, Gables swept the contest, which consisted of three 50-minute rounds. To complete a busy week for National Forensic League standouts, the State Student Congress was held at Tallahassee on Friday and Saturday in the State Capitol chambers. Gables, because of a ruling by the Florida High School Athletic Association, was permitted to send only 10 students to participate, as opposed to their original apportionment of over 20. Representing Gables as senators were Rice Bullock and Richard Schuster. The representatives to the House were Elliott Zack, Mike Sadler, Alan Dinsmore, Martin Goldberg, Betsy Warren, Charlotte Everette, Ronnie Frankel and Steve Magida. Gables' squad flew to Tallahassee Thursday afternoon in time to compete against 22 other state high schools and view some of Florida State University's Homecoming festivities. The team was accompanied by Mr. Stanley Etersque, an algebra teacher, who served as faculty adviser. NFL Calendar Results Announced Last week, the results of school-wide elections for calendar boys and girls were made public. Appearing in the new calendar will be: Mary Jane Ames, Bonny Bennett, Linda Bob, Deedee Briggs, Donna Criswell, Donna DaCostas, Toni Denger, Karen Duggin, Timmie Dutcher, Lief Erickson, Suzy Goyette, Judy Hasencamp, Jeanne Hefinger, Andrea Hernandez, Londa Hill, Len Holloway, Karen Johns, Becky Jones, Nancy Jones, Marilyn Kaufman. Lyn Lachapelle, Vicki Levan, Kate McNeil, Debbie Michelson, Liz Millikin, Nancy Nimmo, Anne Pankey, Bebe Parker, Mike Ann Russell, Mary Schildecker, Connie Sessler, Bess Smith, Cheryl Speck, Janet Swanson, Molly Walters, Hugh Wilson, Nancy Winter and Ann Worthington. Gables High history teacher and National Honor Society sponsor, Quenton Umbenhower, applied last April for a Fulbright Scholarship. A part of the program enables teachers to travel to Europe and South America. Mr. Umbenhower was among the 15 American teachers chosen out of 137 applicants to make a trip to Brazil, which he did over the summer. Chris Pardee, who, as mentioned at an earlier date in this column, has been taking a political poll at Gables High, announces that Nixon is in the lead. A sampling of 875 Gables High History students revealed the following score: Nixon 426 48.6% Kennedy 396 45.3% Abstained 53 6.1% This may be thought unusual in view of the fact that the city of Coral Gables gave Eisenhower 80% to 90% of its votes in the last presidential election, whereas the Republican candidate in this poll is barely in the lead. Through observations of my own, I would like to say that I think it is very close. Either candidate, however, could win in a landslide due to campaigning in the final week. Then again, one could edge out the other, with no great change of opinion in the next few days. In conclusion, I think a great deal of influence on the presidential election will be exerted by the people on Nov. 8. Tag Day Huge Success The Gables Band of Distinction recently held its annual tag day fund-raising and realized in excess of $2000. The officers for this year's band group are: Band captain, Richard Ginn; drum major, Jack McKenna; first lieutenants, Lief Erickson and Barbara Simon; second lieutenants, Dianne Dickinson and Norman Zarr; secretary, Lucille Bogdarn; treasurer, Karen Valentine, and quartermaster, Dennis Koger. The Junior Class is planning for its annual dance on Nov. 12. The theme will be either autumn leaves, a showboat, or a night club with professional entertainment. Junior homerooms will make the final choice. In the field of college politics, Boyce Ezell, '60, was elected president of the freshman class at Florida Statet University. Andy Haggard, '60, vice president of the Freshman class; and Betty Eastridge, student senator, have also ascended politically at FSU. Ellis Vaughn, last year's Student Council president, was chosen to serve as freshman class vice president at Florida. In the Ivy League, Henry Garrison, '57, remained among the top students in his class as a sophomore at Yale. Alan Dunner and Tom Tew, '57, also made the honor roll at Dartmouth College as sophomores. Jim Hirsch, a former Cavaleon editor, has recently returned from Europe and is studying at Columbia. Carol Clifford, '60, is studying on a scholarship at Barnard. Carol, incidentally, is one of Gables 1960 Silver Knight winners. Four Gables students are among the 31 in Dade County enrolled in a course at the University of Miami entitled "Introduction to Engineering." These students attend the University course every Monday night for regular college credit. The four Gables students receiving this honor are Kenneth Allen, Richard McClung, Philip Hess and Eric Stoller.

Threats have been reported to police by two Coral Gables residents. Edith B. Teitler, 5801 Michelangelo and Dr. Irwin Perlmutter, 5808 Michelangelo, reported the threats. At 11 a.m. on Monday, Mrs. Teitler received a phone threat from someone who said, "I'm going to get you and your neighbor." The next day, Tuesday, Dr. Irwin Perlmutter, received a letter with the cryptic note, "Next your wife," scribbled on a piece of paper. They Were Cleaning Up Not Cleaning Out
Coral Gables police scurried to the City National Bank Sunday afternoon when the burglar alarm there went off. When they got there they found men cleaning up—clean up men, that is. The alarm had been tripped off accidentally.
