Message From Across The Sea Greetings From Neptune And House Of Guiness

By GRACE WHIPPLE In today's world of high pressure advertising and direct communication, who would send a commercial thousands of miles in a bottle via the Atlantic Ocean? Eddie Dowling has the answer. Dowling, parking meter supervisor of the Coral Gables Police Department, became the recipient of a bottle-incased message while patrolling the waterfront property of the Arthur Vining Davis estate. "We were checking the debris that had been blown in by Hurricane Donna," explained Dowling, and I found the bottle." He held up a brown object about the size and shape of a soft drink bottle. House of Guiness Raised lettering on the outside identified it as the type of bottle used for House of Guiness Stout. The address was Liverpool, England. Also on the exterior of the bottle, which had been sealed with lead, was a raised outline map of the United States, the islands off the southern tip of Florida and England. "I don't think the bottle came directly across the ocean," said Dowling. "Since it was blown in by the hurricane, it probably took the same path - up through the Bahamas and Key West. "Here's what was in the bottle." He unfolded four tightly rolled sheets of paper, each about the size of an average piece of stationery. Greetings From Neptune Greetings from the realm of Neptune and the House of Guiness and the year the bottle was dropped (1959) were contained on the first sheet. The second paper contained the label which had been made exclusively for the bottle, Guiness Foreign Extra Stout - St. James Gate Dublin - 1759-1959 read the label. Accompanying this was an interesting bit of information about labology - the collecting of bottle labels. On the third bit of paper was an enthusiastic suggestion for the reader to drink Ovaltine. Just what the connection is between English stout and Ovaltine was not explained. Nothing was left to chance as the fourth paper answered a most obvious question - what to do with the bottle. Answer: a table lamp curio. Will Write "That's what I'll probably do with it, said Dowling. I also intend to write the House of Guiness and find out the exact date the bottle was dropped." Has he ever found anything else to equal the interest of his bottled message? "No," said Dowling, "this is the first thing. Most of the time it's just routine."

City Commission Balks On Ponce Stations

A decision on the controversial proposal to erect a gasoline station on LeJeune Rd. between Palermo and Sevilla was delayed last week when the Coral Gables City Commission balked at making up its mind. Establishment of a station there is in line with the city's policy of removing all stations from Ponce de Leon Blvd. Several moves failed at Tuesday's meeting for the lack of a second and the Commission finally voted 3-2 to take the entire matter under advisement. Only Mayor John M. Montgomery and Commission Winston W. Wynne voted to decide the mater Tuesday after hearing several objectors and representatives of Orange State Oil Co., which seeks to erect the station. Heavy Opposition The Commission has been flooded with opposition from neighboring property owners, including Temple Judea, the Deerborne School and the City National Bank. In a previous review of the proposal by the Zoning Board, members were also split 3-2 against the station. Denial was based on the strenuous objections raised by property owners. Rabbi Morris Skop of Temple Judea and Al Jacobson appeared before the City Commission at an earlier conference meeting to negotiate a move of the Temple on Palermo to some other location. The Commission indicated that it would work to obtain another more desirable site for the congregation, which has outgrown its present location, but no action was taken. Former City manager, Ira (Dutch) Willard, president of City National, told the Commission that the bank's objections were strictly based on economic considerations. Marvin Cone, of the Deerborne School, which already has a station across the street from it, appealed on a safety standpoint as did many other opponents. Others charged that their property would be depreciated. Francis McGee, attorney for Orange State, pointed out that 46 of 48 lots on LeJeune are already zoned commercial and that the company had already received tentative approval from a previous city commission for a station at the controversial site, which ironically is not zoned for that purpose and would require a change in zoning.

Car Plows Into 4 Others Parked At Curb

More than $2000 damage resulted early Sunday morning when a car plowed into four other cars parked along South Dixie Hwy. near Santona. Coral Gables Officer Leland J. Pluto charged Willie Joe Louis, 29, of 3681 Day Ave., with careless driving following the accident in which Louis received minor injuries. Louis was northbound on South Dixie Hwy. at 5 a.m. when he struck the rear of a parked car owned by James D. Heaton, 1426 South Dixie Hwy., Apt. 3. Heaton's car slammed into the rear of a third car owned by Rowland Thomas Benson, 1422 South Dixie Hwy., Apt. 2, and Heaton's car pushed into Earl Groll's car. Groll, from Indiana, had his car pushed into the last of the string of parked cars, owned by Richard Centerbar, 1426 South Dixie Hwy. Pluto estimated damage to Louis' car at $600; Heaton's, $1000; Benson's, 500; Groll's, $15 and Centerbar's, $30.
