Dateline: Southwest High Future Homemakers To Be District Hostess
By LAURA HENRY A prominent businessman or Miracle Mile, Carroll Seghers, will present Southwest seniors, for the second consecutive year, with class keys. The gold keys have the Southwest seal mounted on a purple background. The only requirement for receiving the key is to purchase an Oct. 27 issue of the Lancer, the school newspaper. Southwest High's chapter of the Future Homemakers of America will be hostess to the annual District IX meeting of the association, which will be held on Nov. 12. Between 700 and 800 junior and senior high school girls from seven counties will attend. The seven counties include Dade, Broward, Monroe, Palm Beach, Collier, Hendry and Glades. Mrs. Ruth Bootes is advisor of the Southwest chapter, and Linda Badgley and Joan Plant are co-presidents. Anthology Acclaimed "Shining Wings," the creative writing anthology published by the Southwest English Department, was compiled by Mrs. Mabel Staats, creative writing teacher. The anthology received high praise from Narbonne High School, Los Angeles, Calif. The Pacific Coast school asked Southwest to exchange literary publications. The Southwest Chapter of National Honor Society inducted three new members at the United Nations Assembly last Thursday morning. They are Alexander Cordes, Barbara Huhn, and Linda Elliott. Mrs. Adelaide McKim is sponsor. Introductions were made by Tom Boone. Speakers on leadership, character, scholarship and service included Tom Smyth, Karen Lee, James Gray and Joyce Killian. Spanish National Honor Society is tapping this fall and again in the spring. The object of the society is to promote brotherhood and understanding by a cultural exchange of language. Mr. Alfonso Alonso is the sponsor. Art Honor Society Plans for the Art National Honor Society include a field trip to a local gallery and a schedule of bulletin board decorations throughout the year. The club, sponsored by Mr. Richard Kubler, will induct new members soon. Induction ceremonies for the Latin National Honor Society will take place at a tea later this fall. Officers for the club are: Tom Trotter, president; John Gerheim, vice president; Frank Shine, recording secretary; Cheryl Hankins, corresponding secretary; Regina Cox, historian, and Mrs. Sue Addington, sponsor. The Southwest Chapter of National Thespians, sponsored by Mrs. Lou McLean, will induct members in the middle of November. Modern Music Masters began pledging music students Oct. 19. Officers for the year are: Joyce Killian, president; Gary Glick, vice president; Linda Perry, recording secretary; Sharon Arnold, corresponding secretary, and Harriet Tcharin, treasurer. Quill and Scroll, international honor society for high school journalists, is headed by Marsha Shackelford, president; Laura Henry, vice president; Marie Moore, secretary, and Diane Thompson, treasurer. The club consists of students from both the yearbook and newspaper staffs, and is sponsored by Mrs. Mabel Staats. Pledging will begin in early November. Math Club Southwest Miami Math Club, a chapter of the National Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, will induct members soon. The club is sponsored by Mr. Chester Hawley. Two members of the Southwest English Department attended the Florida Council of Teachers of English in St. Petersburg Beach last Friday and Saturday. Mrs. Mabel Staats, president of the Dade County Council of Teachers of English, is chairman of the Secondary English Program. Mrs. Gretchen Hankins, chairman of the Southwest English Department, will lead the group.
MICHAEL LOUIS SANJENIS (left) receives a $600 check from Ira F. Willard, president of the City National Bank of Coral Gables, representing the Florida Bankers Association. Senjenis was awarded a Florida Bankers Educational Foundation scholarship offered by the Association upon the recommendation of Willard. Sanjenis is majoring in finance at the University of Miami. Residing at 3425 Frow Avenue, Coconut Grove, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sanjenis.

Broker Returns From New York
Sydney Josepher, 6075 SW 26th St., has returned from an extensive training course conducted by the New York office of Goodbody and Company, investment brokers. He attended a luncheon with the New York Society of Security Analysts and other luncheons given by partners of the investment company. Josepher is one of the few registered representatives to be given the benefit of this course. Highlights of his instruction included tours of the floors at the New York and American Stock Exchanges. He is the instructor of the stock market course at the Adult Education Center at Miami High School.
Eighty-one per cent of Florida's population consists of white residents and the proportion has been increasing steadily for the past several years, the Florida State Chamber of Commerce reports.
