Deaths in the Gables Samuel Pitkus, 50, Native of Pa.

Services for Samuel Pitkus, 50, of 44 Antilla Ave., were held Tuesday at Riverside Douglas Road Chapel. He was buried at Mt. Sinai Cemetery. Pitkus, who died Sunday, came here 11 years ago from Philadelphia, Pa. He was a produce salesman. He is survived by his wife, Betty; a daughter, Mrs. Lois Kaufman; a son, Donald; three sisters and a grandchild. was a retired engineering inspector for Miami Beach. He was a member of Coral Gables Post 98 of the American Legion and Miami Beach Employees' Benevolent Association. Van Orsdel Coral Gables Mortuary was in charge of services at 4 p.m. Saturday. Private burial was in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.

Mrs. Zyne, 40, Native of France

Mrs. Gisele A. Zyne, 40, was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery Monday following services at the Church of the Little Flower. She came here 13 years ago from Reims, France, and was a member of the Syrian Lebanese-American Club. She is survived by her husband, Michael J. Zyne; a son, Phillip Zyne; two daughters, Rosemary and Yasminie Zyne; and her father, Adrian Plev, all of Coral Gables.

Russell Chapman Buried in Toledo

Russell K. Chapman, 69, of 4305 Braganza Ave., vice president of a machine tool manufacturing company, was buried in Toledo, Ohio, last week following services there. Mr. Chapman, who came to the Coral Gables area 10 years ago, died April 5. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Chapman, of Coral Gables; two sons, Richard A., of Swanton, Ohio, and Dr. John E of Grand Rapids, Mich; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Jamra, of Toledo, and Mrs. Nancy Shannon, of Philadelphia, Pa. and two brothers, Eldred M. and Albert E., both of Toledo.

Jones, Operated Trail Restaurant

James G. Jones, 65, of 6006 Riviera Dr., was entombed at Woodlawn Mausoleum Saturday following services at Combs Coral Gables Chapel. Mr. Jones was owner of the Eight Hundred & Nine Steak House on Tamiami Trail. He came to the area 34 years ago from Oklahoma City, Okla. He was a member of the Elks, Moose and American Legion. Survivors are his wife Julia; three daughters, Mary Ruth and Sarah, both of Coral Gables, and Mrs. Barbara Collins, of Miami Springs; a brother, Gene Dougherty, of Miami, and six grandchildren.

Thomas J. Daley, Resident 7 Years

Services were held Saturday for Thomas James Daley, 816 Granada Blvd., who died Friday morning at Veteran's Administration Hospital. Mr. Daley, a Gables resident for seven years, is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters Mary Ann and Patricia Ellen; and three brothers and two sisters. World War I veteran, he

Former Official At University

Dr. Henry Skinner West, former Gableite and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education at the University of Miami, died last Wednesday at his home in Evanston, Ill. He was 90 years old. The nationally-known educator and college administrator was vacationing in Miami in 1925 when he met the late Dr. Bowman F. Ashe, first UM president. When the University opened its doors in 1926 Dr. West joined the faculty as professor of education. He and his wife, Ann, have been living in Evanston, Ill. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last November. Surviving him are his wife; his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Overbeck, Evanston, Ill.; and two sons, Henry D. West, Maplewood, N.J., and Julien S. West, Mountain Lakes, N.J. Services were held last Saturday in the Grace Episcopal Church, The Plains, Va.

Golfers Try Mixed Play

It was a Scotch foursome Sunday when the Coral Gables Country Club Women's Golf Association invited the Tenth Holers, men's group, to battle over the Granada course. Mrs. Harry Jasper, Cyril Smith, Mrs. Henry Krystow and Mrs. Georgia Miller tied for first place with a net 34 1/2. Mrs. Ed Lawson and William Lewis won second place and coming in third were Mrs. Stanley Burke and Ed Lawson. Cocktails and dinner followed the afternoon game.

Chamber Music Set Next Week

Mme. Renee Longy will present her third and final modern chamber music concert of the season at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, in the UM Lowe Art Gallery. The performance marking the end of Mme. Longy's 10th season of concerts will include Barber's summer music for wind quintet; Loeffler's poems for voice, viola and piano, and the Newman trio for two trumpets and piano. Twelve musicians will participate. There is no charge for admission.

Pompano To Draw Our Youths

The Junior and Senior High youth groups of the First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables will attend the Spring Presbyterian Ruraly Sunday at Pompano Beach. Women's Associations Circles will meet Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the following homes of the hostesses: Mrs. J. L. Sullivan, 1116 Castile, Cir. 2; Mrs. H. N. Higginbothem, 601 Tiziano, Cir. 3. Mrs. R. F. Webb, 3825 Toledo St., Cir. 4; Mrs. C. H. Goodloe, 1100 Alhambra, Cir. 5; Mrs. E. J. Sebastian, 3811 Riviera Dr., Cir. 6. Mrs. Howe E. Mordock, 2828 Segovia St., Cir. 7; Mrs. C. O. Condon, 4150 Hardee Rd., Cir. 8; and Mrs. Andrew Houston, 709 Majorca Ave., Cir. 9. A spaghetti supper, under the auspices of the youth fellowship groups, will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday in fellowship hall.

Church Has The Cards

St. Philip's Episcopal Church will sponsor a two-session bridge tournament on Saturday in Sewanee Hall. Proceeds will go to the seminary fund. The first session will get underway at 1 p.m. and the second session will start at 8 p.m. Prizes and master points will be awarded to the winners in each event. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Carter are chairmen of the events. Bishop Henry Louttit will confirm a class at 7:45 Saturday April 22nd.

Rabbi Visits Unitarians

Rabbi Norman N. Shapiro of Beth David Congregation will be guest speaker, Sunday at the First Unitarian Church. Dr. Charles Philhour of the University of Miami will conduct the service at 11 a.m. Rabbi Shapiro was formerly in Tulsa, Toronto and Akron where he served congregations before coming to Miami last December. He is a graduate of University of Minnesota and of Beth Hammidrash (the college department of Minneapolis Talmud Torah).

St. Mark's Sets 10th Anniversary Fete For Sunday

St. Mark's United Lutheran Church, corner of Le Jeune Rd. and Bird Road, will mark its 10th anniversary Sunday. The Rev. W. Baxter Weant will be the preacher at both the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. His subject: "Anniversary Remembrance." To be blessed at the later service will be the Book of Memories which contains a record of memorial gifts. Beginning at noon, a covered dish dinner will be served in the education unit. The Rev. J. Luther Frantz of 3518 Anderson Rd. conducted the first service April 15th 1951 as organizer of the parish and they met in the Youth Center, with Mrs. Frantz the piano accompanist. The Rev. Royall a Yount preached the first sermon and the Rev., Mr. Weant became the first pastor. On March 21st, 1954, when ground was broken for the present edifice, it was Pastor Frantz who turned the first spade of earth, The Rev. Ralph Bergstresser is now pastor. Life scout Tom Smith, formerly a member of the parish will be the first member in Scout Troop No. 229 to receive the Pro Deo et Patria award which will be a part of the anniversary service. Rabbi Picks Eichmann

Rabbi Morris A. Skop, Temple Judea, will discuss the Eichmann Trial, "Revenge or Justice," at the 8:15 p.m. service Friday at the Temple. Cantor Herman K. Gottlieb will chant the Sabbath liturgy assisted by the Temple choir. The Sisterhood at Temple Judea will present the film, "The Family Physician and Cancer," at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Doctors Bernard Yesner, Joseph Rudnick and Robert Hyams will discuss "Cancer in the Female Today." The public is invited. The film is being shown through courtesy of the Cancer Society of Greater Miami.

Joe Weil Bar Mitzvah

Joseph Weil, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Weil, 425 Miller Rd., will be Bar Mitzvah Saturday at Temple Judea. Rabbi Morris A. Skop and Cantor Herman K. Gottlieb will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service. Joseph is a seventh grade student at Ponce de Leon Junior High School and has been a member of the Hebrew School at the temple for the past two years. He was one of the four essay winners when Israel celebrated its 10th birthday. His parents will be hosts at the Kiddush following the Bar Mitzvah. Out of town guests for the occasion are Joe's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mahler and Mrs. Lena Weil of New York; also his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert E. Mahler of N.Y.

Religion's Answer To Science Topic

A Christian Scientist from San Francisco will speak at Dade County Auditorium April 25, on how her faith meets the challenge to religion posed by modern scientific discoveries. The lecturer is Mary Wellington Gale, formerly in the advertising business in Chicago. She is speaking on the invitation of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Coral Gables.
