'Never Goes Second Class' Folks Bustin' Out All Over About Our New Fire Station

By MAURICE LABELLE Times Staffer The new half million dollar [?] station — complete with baby blue venetian blinds for the chief's office — was dedicated Saturday morning. City and fire fighting officials from the county area gathered to gawk at what must be rated one of the plushiest fire stations — if not the finest — in the country. "I think it shows that the City of Coral Gables never goes second class," said Mayor John M. Montgomery. HIGH RISE "It's a wonder we didn't have a high rise problem," said Montgomery facetiously, pointing out that the training tower is two stories above the normal limit. Chief Paul Matheson, proud of his new home, said: "Let me assure you we shall give you the same high level of service. . ." "It's an outstanding edifice," Commissioner Frank Kerdyk said, relating the struggle waged by the city to arrive at an acceptable building. Said Commissioner Robert Searle: "I'm happy to see the city of Coral Gables finally get the facilities it has needed." NEW GIMMICK Commissioner Joe Murphy saw in the new station an end to any disciplinary problems Chief Matheson might have. All the chief would have to do, Murphy said, would be to threaten duty at the old station. For O. K. Houstoun Jr., the architect, the project was a challenge that brought him much satisfaction. "It's been a pleasant job, the most pleasurable job I've ever had," said Houstoun. He then handed over a large gold key to Chief Matheson, who opened the station to the visiting public. BUNKS GONE Gone are the traditional bunks — replaced by single beds complete with headboards. Firemen awaiting the call will lounge around in air conditioned comfort. When they work, it will be under ideal conditions. With modern equipment purchased along with the building. And when sirens wail, the firefighters will be on their way and to the scene of fire precious minutes because of the new proximity to the south end of town.
