We Want Saturdays Off, 82 Employes Say to City

A petition requesting a five-day week from the Public Service Department employes has been turned over to the personnel director, City Manager L. W. Robinson said. The petition calls for a 421⁄2-hour week, a cut of 51⁄2 hours. This is basically what had been recommended by the Personnel Department last year, but which failed to gain the approval of the City Commission. A total of 82 persons signed the petition, Personnel Director Robert Harrison said, but a couple of the signers were members of another department. Most of the city's approximately 650 employes are on a five-day 40-hour week. Exceptions are the public service employes, firemen who work 56 hours and motor pool personnel who are on a 421⁄2-hour schedule. Bus drivers are on a 40-hour week, but work 15 hours overtime. Waste Department employes work a theoretical 40-hour week, but are allowed to leave whenever through with their runs. This has been done to encourage speedier pickups, according to Finance Director Kennetly Allyn.

71 Blocks Don't Have Alleyways

A total of 71 city blocks do not have service alleys, City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. reported to the City Commission last week. The Commission approved the improvement of three alleys last Tuesday. One of the 20-foot alleys is located south of Coral Way and running from Segovia to Cardena. The second lies just south of South Dixie Highway and running from Yumuri to Madruga Court. A third approvement will be located west of Douglas Road and runs north from Giralda Street and its intersection with an east-west alley.

Motel Gets Extra Space

Builder A. H. Sakolsky, whose plan to build a 13-story apartment at 720 Biltmore Way failed because of opposition, found himself in the role of opposing someone else's zoning variance last week. Sakolsky objected to a plan of Albert Singer, owner of the University Court Motel on South Dixie Highway, to provide additional off-street parking in the rear of the motel property. The builder said that Singer had promised to erect a buffer between the motel and neighboring residents. Additional parking constituted encroachment, Sakolsky said. Singer's request was granted on a year-to-year basis on a unanimous vote of the City Commission. No other objection had been raised.
