NEW CHIEF EMPHASIZES FAMILY He's Mr. Mayor by Day But at Night Bob Searle Shoots Goals, Tends Fires

By RAYMOND LANG Times Staffer The Robert L. Searle family is like most happy American families. When Searle pulls into the garage of his home at 1306 Castile Ave after a day at the insurance office, he's like most dads. Before he can get into the house, son Skip or Jim tempts him into shooting a few baskets. The basketball goal is over the garage door. HAS CHOICE Once Searle gets past the hoop into his living room, he can do one of several things. He can relax in one of the living room's several easy chairs and read the paper. Or he can saunter on to the porch to take a gander at TV. Possibly his daughter, Nancy might ask him to the patio for a game of ping pong. START FIRE Or Mrs. Searle might ask her husband to get the fire started in the barbecue pit so she can prepare dinner. And if the boys aren't at the hoop, or the daughter at the ping pong table or the wife at the barbecue pit, they might all be waiting for dad at the swimming pool. This is Robert L. Searle and his family in a typical evening at home. Whatever they do, they like to do it together, as Mrs. Searle put it. "We like to spend our time with dad," she said. Petite and pretty in a soft-lavender dress with tiny pearl earrings and matching necklace, she smiled at her husband sitting beside her on the sofa. "Daddy has always been very good. He always gives us his weekends from Friday afternoon to Monday morning. "That's why I never fuss." A very special weekend for the Searles is the time they spend together at Key Colony on Key Biscayne. There they swim, golf or just relax. But during weekdays, Searle is selling insurance. Mrs. Searle is keeping house. And the children, when they're not in school, have their own domestic chores. CHILDREN'S CHORES "They all have their duties to perform," said Searle, smiling at his children. "They're like any other teenagers. Sometimes they do their chores and sometimes they don't. But most of the time they do." Skip, when he's not mowing the lawn, is playing defensive halfback for the gridiron crew at Gables High. Jim, if he's not raking leaves, is striding to the batter's box for one of the local baseball teams. As for Nancy she likes to sew and cook. She offers a corkscrew grin when asked if she likes to wash dishes. The former City Commissioner again smiled at his children. His eyes settled on Jim. "Is that a new shirt you've got, Jim?" "Yes." "I like it," Searle chuckled. He briefly recalled what he wore when he was his son's age. "Well, every generation has different tastes." THE FAMILY OF Mayor Robert L. Searle are relaxing in their backyard. Left to right are, the mayor, Mrs. Searle, Skip, Nancy, Jim and their dog, Taffy.
