University of Miami students will transform a portion of the campus into colorful carnival grounds for the opening of the fourth annual Carni-Gras this evening (Thursday). More than 10,000 students and local residents are expected to attend the festival events 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday and 7 p.m. to midnight Friday in the student union area. The proceeds, which last year totaled more than $6,000 will be split between the University of Miami scholarship fund and booth operating organizations. A ferris wheel and other pieces of mechanical carnival equipment will dominate nearly 60 amusement booths operated by some 45 campus organizations.
