Insuranceman Paul Gainer Let the Other Man Go Ahead, You Make Money
By ROLFE NEILL Times Staffer Paul Gainer had a friend during World War II who told Gainer to look him up before he got out of the Navy and he would tell Gainer how to make $10,000 a year. Gainer looked him up. The "how" was to pick a leading life insurance company and go to work for it. Gainer did this and his second year in the field, 1948, made his first $10,000. BEGAN CAREER It seems that ever since this man Gainer has been making money or setting records for the Prudential Insurance Co. of America. He was transferred to the Gables in November, 1960, from Columbus, Ohio, as local district manager. Gainer was in the news last week for winning a district citation and it seemed a good time to find out a bit about the insurance business. He was found in his office at 1301 Ponce de Leon Boulevard. The private office walls are a rich walnut. The only thing on them is a set of four Japanese prints. In asking about the correct spelling of the last name, Gainer informed us: "G-a-i-n-e-r ... You can't be a gainer when you're losing." IMPORTANT As for insurance people: "Next to the minister, he's the most important man who comes in your house." Gainer, who was a public school teacher and coach before World War II, has 48 agents under him here. Their territory is from Flagler Street south to Key West. His district was 24th out of Prudential's several hundred agencies in 1960 and that's what the citation was all about. Prudential men wrote $18 1/2 million in business last year out of this office. "Our aim is to be first in 1961 and we're there at the end of March. I don't know if we can hold it or not." HOW DO YOU? How do you get 48 men to produce? "I think if you treat everybody like human beings they will do the same for you. I try to make room for my men to advance; four of them have become district managers themselves. "All I say is 'Find me somebody who can do your job better than you and you can move on.' You've got to make men feel that there's a chance for them." Gainer, his wife and their 15-year-old daughter, Jean Carol, have bought a home at 3600 Durango Ave. "We're still living out of packing cases but that'll be over soon."
