REACTIONS to ART
by ROBERT S. HURWITZ. Most art groups and organizations, acting as the salon voices of this community, are dead. The serious artists know they exert no influence, and the members admit it privately. Most permit their members to exhibit whatever they wish, year after year, after year, and win meaningless ribbons, year after year, after year. A good example of group imperfection, "tea party" influence, disregard for quality, and personality conflict, can be found in workings of the present Blue Dome Art League annual exhibit. Singling out the Blue Dome as an example (there are others) would be willful if the facts were not known. I have the facts, the names, and the determination, to challenge the integrity of the show. With the distinguished Tripp Russell architect, and the artist Warren Soned, I was asked to judge the present Blue Dome Exhibit at the Miami Beach Art Center. It was an honor to be asked by those who asked. The judging was difficult. Difficult, because most of the art was sub-par, inferior, and without merit. It took hours to wade through the mess. But the decision of the judges was made, and I thought final. Then the outside "tea party" pressure. "How dare you not select my painting?" "The vote can be changed if you'll agree." "How were those judges selected?" "Call that Hurwitz and get him to change his vote — I deserve an honorable mention." "So and so doesn't deserve a ribbon." The telephone was hot — the ribbon seekers were harassed. The losers had never lost before. The show was not "rigged" and that was too much to take. There's no real need to mention names in order to make my point. In this case the decision of the judges stands despite the pressure and in spite of those exerting it. The tribute, to the good painers of this group show, is clear; their good work can be spotted quickly. You'll select the good art I assure you. And to think, that several of the area's really good artists were black listed, because they didn't come up to standards. And to think, that most members of this exclusive group can't even explain the Blue Dome purpose, rules and history. The pressure peddlers of this group and others is excessive. They are killing the good intentions of serious minds. Giant needs exist for groups with a serious purpose; for example, there are the workshop and lecture series of the Miami Art Council. The artists who hide behind the mask of winning ribbons by group favoritism can now be exposed by the people who know the facts.
The Steelmen's Gamble
Did they know what they were doing? Did they realize that by their conspiratorial manner in raising te price of steel they had multiplied and telescoped the harm that their decision would inflict on the nation's economy and on the steel industry itself? Their sudden change of mind gives definite evidence that the only possible answer to these questions is an unqualified no... The era of informal cooperation among government, labor and management is over, at least as far as the semi-monopolistic industries are concerned. The era when effective institutional arrangements have to be devised, designed to set the responsibilities of each one of the three, is coming, thanks to Mr. Blough. Considering the still very great importance of steel, it is imperative that new men acquire positions of authority in U.S. Steel who are endowed with a thorough knowledge of production of public relations and of politics. —Max Ascoli in The Reporter.
