RESIDENTS HUFFY Granada Work Waits While ...
The City Commission ran into an unexpected roadblock on its street improvement program Tuesday. A public hearing on improving Granada Boulevard from South Dixie Highway to Coral Way led to a claim the City was overlooking the possibility the County might do the work if it were asked. This was the claim of Paul Fischer, 4915 Granada Blvd. Fischer said he had contacted state and county officials, obtained records of the Florida State Legislature, and "proved" that Granada had been designated an arterial road in 1941. Neither the Commissioners, City Attorney Ted Semple nor City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said they knew about the act of the legislature. They agreed to defer action until Semple could look into Fisher's claims. Fischer's fellow residents along Granada were left cold by his proposal, however. They said they were opposed to any kind of improvement on Granada, period. In what was probably the most heated session to date on the road improvement program, the property owners blasted the Commission for ignoring their wishes. "I've been riding over it four times a day for the past 10 years and I'm still okay," Thomas J. Kelly, 4614 Granada Blvd., told the Commission. "I can't understand why you pick this street out to be repaired," said Kelly angrily. "We're trying to bring Coral Gables up to standard," said Commissioner George Wilson, who pointed out the recent Jaycee survey indicated poor or bumpy streets are the number one gripe. "I'm sure everyone wants the streets improved until it comes to their street," Mayor Robert L. Searle said. "I think you're throwing away your money," retorted Kelly, who proposed that the street be closed to traffic while Fischer suggested it be made a County highway. Fischer said that the state had designated Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Anderson Road, Bird Road, Red Road, Maynada Street, Sunset Drive and South Dixie Highway arterial roads. "It is not," said Commissioner Franklin Evans of Granada. "Sez who?" Fischer shot back. The group left in a huff. Later, a group of Riviera Drive property owners made their second appearance to protest improvement of their street. The City Commission voted unanimously to go ahead with the improvement district when the group failed to come with engineering information to support their earlier claim the road was okay. This was to be the last improvement this fiscal year.
HEAVY TRAFFIC on Granada Boulevard brought complaints from Mrs. Helen Hahne, 4711 Granada Blvd., at Tuesday's public hearing on improving that thoroughfare. (Times photo by Maurice Labelle).
"IT'S PERFECTLY SMOOTH," says Mrs. Rosebud Clephane, 5301 Granada Blvd., of her street. Lee Lincoln, who owns 1,000 feet of Granada, and Thomas Kelly, 4615 Granada Blvd., await their turn.
Jaycees Lauded
