Catlin Is Cavalier Valedictorian With 4.79 Rimland Is Salutatorian

By LEE SANDLER Correspondent Jack Catlin was named valedictorian of Coral Gables Senior High School last week at the first of the school's annual series of awards assemblies. David Rimland was named salutatorian. Catlin earned his honor by compiling a 4.7916 average during his three years in high school. It is possible to maintain and average above 4.0 because students are awarded honor points and bonus points for taking certain advanced and accelerated courses. Rimland's average was established at 4.6562, a mistake which caused the school to name Stephen Scherer salutatorian. Scherer was announced at the assembly and awarded the placque. An hour later he was informed that Rimland had actually won. Seven hours later it was announced to the school. Other awards made at the assembly were the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Citizenship Award to Barbara Beckham; DAR Senior History Award to Susan Atteridge; and DAR Junior History Award to Jeannie Crawford. Outstanding sophomore girl award went to Donna Stevenson while Doug Shier was named outstanding sophomore boy. The American Legion Awards were won by Jane-Carol Johnson and Barry Boyer. Runner-up awards were given to Donna Criswell and Russell Barefield. Oustanding Junior Girl and Boy were Caroline Patterson and Steven Alter. Another award to a junior boy, the Harvard Book Award was awarded to Charles Hay. Outstanding Senior Girl and Boy were Bebe Parker and Jack Catlin. The assembly also honored all the seniors who have maintained an average of 4.0 or better during their three years at Coral Gables High. Fifty students have attained that achievement. Miss Joan Reitsma, cheerleader sponsor, has announced the new cheerleaders for the 1962-63 school year. The 10 who will serve are Jackie Avant, Donna Card, Alice Davies, Janice Dutcher, Liz Kononoff, Molly Megathlin, Jackie Modisett, Sue Nichols, Cindy Sheppard and Beverly Sonen. No More 1/2 Years

Changes in the presentation of courses at Coral Gables High School are charted for next year. Each course will continue for a full school year on the basis of annual promotion. Formerly, a student could earn credit for half a year's work in a year's subject. The student will not receive a semester average, but one grade for the course will be given (instead of two grades as before). The summer school program has been set up with classes from June 18 to July 27. Courses will be taught in the fields of English, mathematics, social studies, business, science and languages. Out of a total student body of 3,000 this year, only 61 dropped out, according to Principal Harry Rath. The school expects to receive an increase of about 400 for the fall semester. The cafeteria will be enlarged to accommodate this growth. Sixteen new teachers will be either added or replaced on the faculty.

MEMO TO THE THUNDERING HERD OF METRO COMMISSION CANDIDATES

Fellow Aspirants to Public Office: Eventually some of you will get elected. When this happens, please remember that your predecessors have done a pretty thorough job of lousing up the show. In order to redress the wrongs done to the community, I would recommend that you confine your reading of the local daily newspapers to the funny pages. You'll be amazed at the good results of a little independent thought! Sincerely, AL SCHRADER, GOP nominee for State Legislature PAID POL. ADV.
