Whopper of a Sunshine Travelogue Much Percolating and He Has His First Book; It's 512 Pages

By SANDY CALPINI Correspondent A Coral Gables man whose hobby and work are traveling has captured his Marco Polo Florida adventures in his first published book, "Florida, Land of Fortune." Stephen J. Flynn's 512-page volume "has been percolating in my sub - conscious for years." The author took about a year and a half to build up his comprehensive book, drawing on his many trips to "every nook and cranny of Florida" with his wife Dorothy. "The premise of the book is that if you're coming to Florida you ought to first investigate the state, know whether to open a business or where to settle," the author explained. Half the book is an informal travelogue of Florida. "I've tried to bring out the flavor of a place and I've included many anecdotes." Coral Gables is featured and there is a good deal about the boom of the 1920's and the growth of the city. Part two is a discussion of specific things concerning Florida — retirement; real esate; stocks and bonds; fishing for pleasure and a living; education; both from the standpoint of the parents as well as for the prospective teacher; professions and boating. "Many people don't know that you can cross the state by boat through Lake Okeechobee," so there is a chapter on boating. The 47-year-old first-book author is not just dabbling in the publishing business. At present he is a staff correspondent for the Kiplinger Florida letter, a Sunday travel and financial writer for the Chicago Tribune and has "a few dusty manuscripts tucked away in a drawer." His early writing career began on a small daily "working about 85 hours a week." In those days, "When I arrived at the paper I was sports editor. By 9 I had covered the police blotter, by noon a men's luncheon, business reporter in the afternoon and a PTA meeting in the evening." Flynn felt all the varied jobs were good training. He met his wife Dorothy when they both were working on a Niagara Falls paper. She was in the advertising part and now Mrs. Flynn has her own real estate business in South Florida. The couple has lived at 604 Minorca Ave., for 14 years. As for another book, "I might pull out one of those tucked away somewhere and polish it up."
