Mile's Merchants Eye $16,000 Fund For Promotion

Miracle Mile merchants and property owners are planning a $16,000 annual joint promotion campaign that may eventually grow to encompass the entire downtown area and more. "It's now up to the merchants," said Don Mullen, president of the Miracle Mile Association which is spearheading the plan. Charles Finkelstein has already organized a group of 35 members of the Miracle Mile Property Owners Association into backing the move on a 50-50 basis, he said. Twenty-five merchants have reportedly signed up so far. "It's a survival thing for both people," said Mullen following the Nov. 28 meeting of the Miracle Mile Association at City Hall. While the Mile merchants have no objection to other groups joining them in the venture, Mullen said, they will concentrate in organizing their own efforts first. "We have not strong objections to a city-wide thing," said Mullen. Target date to get the promotion plan underway is January. Eventually, as more merchants and property owners join, Mullen said, a man may be hired to handle not only promotion but public relations as well. The plan, as explained by Mullen, entails a $4 per front foot assessment to merchants and an equal amount to property owners. The $8 a front foot assessment would cost merchants $160 each annually.

Arson Ruled Out; Fire In 'Barn' Was Accidental

Arson has been ruled out as the cause of the spectacular $62,000 fire that destroyed the Furniture Barn Nov. 24. Fire Chief Paul Matheson said Tuesday that nothing in the investigation of the costly fire indicates foul play. Cause of the fire was probably spontaneous or accidental combustion of materials in the building's loft. Both the building and the contents were fully insured against loss. Located at Douglas Road and Marabella Avenue, the barn was owned by Dr. L. J. Moorefield and the business was owned by Milton Berg. Both approximately an equal amount of insurance on the building and contents, according to firemen. City Manager L. W. Robinson, Jr. last week said that the building may not be replaced without a change in zoning.
