Gableite authoress Mrs. Mabel Meadows Staats has recently published a delightful book of poems "Bright Quarry" which show penetrating insight and deep interest in nature. Mrs. Staats, who has been writing poetry since she was eight, helped her late husband, Dr. J. Riley Staats, who was chairman of geography at the University of Miami, conduct cross-country field trips for students. A teacher of creative writing, journalism and English at Southwest High School, she is listed in Who's Who of American Women and received the Classroom Teacher's Award from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. Coral Gables Pen Women have named their UM scholarship fund in honor of Mrs. Margaret C. Williams, one of their founding patronesses, for the work she did in maintaining the fund. Always interested in the arts, Mrs. Williams, wife of Dr. George C. Williams, was also one of the founders and the first treasurer of the Coral Gables Woman's Club and the Coral Gables Music Club. A tropical Christmas party with sparkling snow in Coral Gables? Yes, The Century Club has ordered snow, snow and more snow for its Dinner Dance which will be held next Friday evening at the Coral Gables Country Club. According to H. D. Jarvis, secretary-treasurer, who is planning the affair, a rich blue background will be provided for shining white trees with branches laden with gleaming snow flakes of various sizes. Santa will be skating on a turn-table pond while two other Kris Kringles slide in the snow. Among those planning large parties are Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Miller who are hosting a table for 30. The Thomas Moyes have 24 including Dr. Henry King Stanford, University of Miami president, and Mrs. Stanford. Others in this party include Gen. Theodore Weyhers, Mr. and Mrs. William Lewis and the Ray Cummings. Mr. and Mrs. W. Bates Cole and Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Highley will be the guests of the Bowen Nelsons. Col. and Mrs. Henry Simmonite are having a party of 40 and Lucile and Tom Wiley will be hosts to 32 friends. The W. L. Philbricks will have as their guests the J. H. Millers and the Clifford Van Orsdels have invited the William T. Woodards. New club members who have made reservations are Judge and Mrs. David Dyer, Mr. and Mrs. James Brumby, the L. Allen Morrisses, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Bailey, Mr. and Mrs. Orin Phelps, the Merrell F. Selfs, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Fuller and Mr. and Mrs. John Clark Fetzer. New President D. Merle Walton along with Mrs. Walton will be in the receiving line with the Homer Fraziers, J. Abney Cox and Mr. and Mrs. William Tschumy. Have discovered one of the reasons why banks close at 2 p.m. - the officials need time to meditate on thought problems. Recently Rollo Budde of the City National Bank, called The Times office for some information to settle an argument among the heads of that establishment. The problem - how many mills are in one cent? Webster's dictionary soon supplied the answer - 10. This is really getting bank calculations down to the fine points.

All the Coral Gables FitzGibbons just returned from a family reunion at Richmond Heights, Mo., with all their Eastern relatives who attended the wedding of Sharon Lynn Burkhardt and John Michael FitzGibbon. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick R. Burkhardt of Richmond Heights and the groom, a junior at St. Louis University Dental School, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas L.
