Says No to Dixie Pedestrian Signal

By EDDIE BLACK Corresponden. A plea by merchants opposite the University of Miami for a pedestrian traffic signal at Breedings Drug Store across from the University of Miami has met with a turn-down by the State Road Department. Richard Rowland, general manager of Breedings Drug Store, says State officials say there are not enough pedestrians crossing at that point to warrant a pedestrian traffic light. "As far as I know," says Rowland, "it is a dead issue." Dr. Henry King Stanford, president of the University of Miami, has asked university physical plant members to confer with traffic authorities. The university will ask for a pedestrian cross walk across from Breedings and a delayed light at Miller Road and Highway U.S. 1, he says. The delayed light would enable autos to turn right off Miller Road onto U.S. 1 and also help pedestrians to cross U.S. 1. "The conclusions do not warrant a traffic signal on U.S. 1 because the heavily travelled route is used by 35,000 autos a day," said James Freeman, Metro traffic analyst. "There must be 150 pedestrians an hour during an eight-hour day before positive action can be taken. The pedestrian count at this intersection is extremely low."

Coming Next Week

In these pages you'll read next week about how a pastor and his family make their House Into a Home. The family is that of Dr. Frank Alfred Mathes, pastor of Granada Presbyterian Church. Their home is on University Drive. Photographer Raymond Lang was allowed to move about freely as the Mathes family went through its normal pursuits. The results are some candid pictures. It is one of the many features you'll find in next week's THE CORAL GABLES TIMES

Needed: Homes for Boys; You May Like to Swap

Homes for six boys arriving Dec. 22 and Jan. 5 from Lima, Peru, are needed by the American Youth Exchange. "We have placed all the girls," Mrs. Howard Learner, one of the directors, said, "but we need to find foster homes for boys." The foster parents are only responsible for the exchange student's room, meals and laundry. The length of the visit is 10 weeks. Furthermore, the visit entitles the child of the American foster parents to spend 10 weeks in any South American country of his choice. The American student never stays with the South American student who visits him. Additional information concerning the students arriving from Peru can be obtained by calling Mrs. Learner at MO 1-0892 or Mrs. Robert M. Altemus, MO 1-6954.
