'You Trip Here, Trip There, But Thank God, We Pass Over'

By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter It all began with a waltz at a christening in Philadelphia in 1912. Fifty years, eight children, 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren later, Placid and Teresa Anastasi celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Nov. 25. "The only thing I can tell you in 50 years," Mr. Anastasi said in the living room of his apartment at 333 Catalonia Ave., "is that sometimes there are humps. "You trip here, you trip there," the retired Sicilian bricklayer said, using his calloused hands for punctuation, "But thank God, we can pass them over." Anastasi, whose first name, Placid, means "calm," is 72. Monday, as he talked about his marriage, he was dressed in a neat charcoal suit with a blue bow tie. He's lost none of his hair, though it is gray now. Anastasi recalled how he asked Teresa for a dance at the christening and after that tried to figure out how he could meet her again. It was winter then. And in winter, a bricklayer was not working. But he saw her on the street one day. "After the christening, I said, 'Look, I'm a young fella. I'd like to go with you. 'I got no money, but I'm in good health, thank God. And when spring comes, I'll go back to work.'" As for 72-year-old Teresa, dressed in a gold brocade dress, she said she had but one question for this young Sicilian who had come to America five years before he met her. "That's the first thing I asked him, do you go to church? If you go to church, I'll marry you. If you don't, skip it." As for what followed, all you need to know is that Placid Anastasi WAS a church-going man. THE ANASTASIS ON WEDDING DAY IN 1912 HERE THEY ARE TODAY 50 YEARS LATER

20 City Employes Assigned Cars

A total of 20 vehicles are assigned to various city employes on a full-time, take-home basis. The list runs from City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. down to maintenance men. Other vehicles are assigned to individuals on a part time basis and others may obtain them for specific uses through the motor pool. Why are cars assigned to individuals permanently? "These people are on call 24 hours a day," said Robinson. The list includes Joe Mantinan, Robinson's administrative assistant who has a variety of duties, but also such employes as the internal auditor Paul Gleman; Eddy Dowling head of the parking meter division; Cecil Wiggins, purchasing agent. Mantinan is due to receive a recently purchased "VIP" car (a Buick) that will be used to transport visiting officials as well as serve as Mantinan's assigned auto. He now drives an old model car. What limitations are placed on the use of these cars assigned full time? They may be used to go back and forth to work, said Robinson, but not on any extended side trips. Robinson said he wouldn't consider stopping at the market on the way home, an unauthorized use. Here is a list of the cars assigned full time according to the city manager's office: City Manager Robinson. Joe Mantinan, administrative assistant. Monty Marshall, director of building and zoning. William Fagan, director of public works. Ken Campbell director of building and maintenance. Cecil Wiggins, purchasing agent. Paul Gleman, internal auditor. Kenneth Allyn, finance director.
