Fore! Our Golf Open Is Open!
The Gables' Fourth Annual Open is in progress today (Thursday) through Sunday and will draw 150 professionals to the Biltmore Golf Course. Some of the game's top names are here. The Pro-Amateur was held yesterday (Wednesday). Today, a field of 150 pros and 10 amateurs are on the links. Friday night the field will be cut to 60 pros. The playoffs are Saturday and Sunday. The tourney's official program this year has been arranged so that daily pairings will be printed inside and buyers each day will find current information. This is done by utilizing the City's small printshop in the evenings after the next day's pairings have been prepared. Also, this year the back cover has been sold as an advertisement. Some $500 in extra revenue will be obtained there. Heading the list from the Louisiana tournament is big John Barnum, winner of the Cajun Classic Open. For years this veteran has been "often a bridesmaid" but last week was his first major tournament victory. The entries from the Mobile Tournament are headed by Doug Ford, winner of the Bing Crosby National and the Eastern Open this year and currently 13th in the standing of official money winnings. Another veteran entry is Ted Kroll. When Ted won the Canadian Open last July, it was his first tournament victory since he copped the "World Championship" of golf in August 1956, which netted him $50,000. His money winning record of $72,835 in 1956 stood unbroken until Arnold Palmer cracked it in 1960. Also listed is Dave Ragan, 14th leading money winner and winner of the Beaumont Open earlier this month. Another early entrant is Paul Bondeson who is remembered by local golfers as second place winner, after Bill Casper Jr., in the Doral Open last March. Other familiar names to local fans are Frank Boynton, who was second low pro in the Pro-Am of the Coral Gables tournament last year; Jim Ferree, who finished way down on the list in the last Coral Gables Open but won the Jamaica Open later in the winter. Entries previously announced were last year's Coral Gables Open champ, George Knudson and Bobby Nichols who has won more than $30,000 on the tour this year.
