FRED HARTNETT FINDS THE CORN TASTY

Several Hundred Attend First 'Pig Skinner' Fete

By MAURICE LABELLE Times Reporter Nearly 270 Coral Gables area leaders turned out Tuesday night to rub elbows with "their" team — the University of Miami Hurricanes — at Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club. They picked up some intimate bits from players who sat at tables as their guests and heard more about them from their coaches. They learned, probably for the first time, that the Hurricanes (7-3) would meet the Cornhuskers of Nebraska (8-2) in New York's Gotham Bowl Dec. 15. Their hero, All America George Mira, was accorded the greatest accolade when he was picked by the team as its "Most Valuable Player." "He'll be the greatest quarterback in the country next year," predicted Head Coach Andy Gustafson. Mira, accepting a huge gold helmet topped trophy, said a few words of praise for the line that made him and left speeches for others. He shared the limelight with Jim O'Mahony, most valuable lineman," and Nick Ryder, who was not there to pick up his trophy for "most valuable back." A bit of humor was injected into the affair when Assistant Head Coach Walter Kichefski presented a series of token awards to a variety of players. Hampered by a bad public address system, Master of Ceremonies H. T. (Dutch) Schulenberg and Comedienne Gina Wilson pumped more humor into the distinguished group. But it was Bob Hildreth who probably got the most laughs with his droll repetoire of jokes, aided by a little better mike work. At 10 p.m., just as Allstate's John Koziol was to present the highlight of the evening, a special film about the 1962 All America selections, Gustafson invoked the curfew and off he went with his boys. The affair, the first of its kind to be sponsored by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for a repeat performance next year under the auspices of the "Pig Skinners Club."

Self-Propelled

About 20 Coral Gables High School students pushed their stalled school bus from Sevilla down Salzedo to the bus terminal on Aragon, Wednesday, Nov. 28. That's a distance of five blocks. "They said that they wanted to go home and they might as well take the bus as far as the terminal," said Don Latham, bus dispatcher. When the bus was secure in its stall, Latham fixed a fuel line and the motor turned over immediately. "The kids were very cooperative, but were a little surprised that repairs would be so simple," Latham said.
