Many-Splendored House Continued from page 28

The back of the house with carvings designed by Mr. Seelye, overlooks a tree-shaded slope. Many-Splendored House Continued from page 28 In addition, Mr. Seelye turns out woodwork for the house in his workshop in the basement. He designed and made the inside and outside walnut balcony rails and the exterior ornaments. The dream of building the chalet began two years ago when the Seelyes went to Europe and fell in love with Swiss gables and balconies and rich wooden interiors. They came home, put their dreams on paper, made scale models, assembled their treasures, and proceeded to build. The happy result is the chalet, with its sturdy white-brick chimney and cross-paned double windows, nestled, as it should be, on a steep grassy slope. Mrs. Seelye emphasizes that their house isn't an attempt to reproduce an actual Swiss chalet but rather to capture the spirit of one. "Swiss houses are part German, part French, and part Italian," she says. "There is no rigid convention, and that's one reason they're charming." Above: The Seelyes resurrected the living-room fireplace, with its original hearth, from a dump. Fine points like these hand-etched doorknobs abound through the house. Notice that even the latch front is carved with an intricate pattern.
