They Look for 'Al', But 'Twas 'Mike'
When Mrs. Jeanette Hunt, Youth Center Director, first noticed letters missing from the expensive sign at the center's entrance she had an immediate suspicion. The thief must be named "Al." Why? Because the letters "A" and "L" were missing. Dutifully, she informed the police station. Soon, the "R" and "S" were gone, too. In a short time someone reported: The letters weren't taken by "Al" at all but by "Mike." And Mike hadn't stolen them. They were in the City's sign shop for a periodic fixing up by Mike Kelly. Things were spelled properly again yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).
CAP Notches Its 21st; Our Group the Liveliest
The Civil Air Patrol noted its 21st birthday Saturday when the Southeast Florida Group celebrated the event at the anniversary banquet and awards dinner at the Golden Glades Hotel. Stretching from Fort Lauderdale to Key West, the Southeast Group flys more sorties, conducts more search and rescue missions, holds more honors than any other state group, according to W-O W. Murray Frankfurt. And the Miami International Squadron is the most active of the Southeast group. The non-profit corporation, an official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, made its awards and selected the outstanding cadet from the 21 squadrons in the SE area having cadets. Five other squadrons are included in the 26-squadron group. Awards were for general excellence, operations, information, recruitment and cadet of the year. There were no winners from our area. A cadet squadron is composed of at least 15 cadets and one senior. Activities of various squadrons vary somewhat from patrolling the coasts in time of crisis to air and sea rescue work in cooperation with the Armed Forces and others.

'Joan of Arc' Oratorio Is on Sunday
One of the major UM music programs of the year, the Arthur Honegger-Paul Claudel dramatic oratorio "Joan of Arc at the Stake," will be presented by the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra on Sunday and Monday evenings, at Miami Beach and Dade County Auditoriums. Directed by Fabien Sevitzky, the symphony orchestra's third concert of the season will feature five vocalists, six actors, two choruses, and the 90-member symphony. The one hour and thirty minute work contains a prologue and 11 scenes, and will be sung in English. It will be presented without an intermission. The dramatic score, which unfolds the climatic moments in the life of the French peasant girl who in the 15th century led armies against the English and drove them from France, is based upon the poem by Claudel. Honegger and Claudel, both Frenchmen, have combined elements of an opera, a cantata, a passion play and a choral symphony in producing this work, rendering it a unique phenomenon in music of the twentieth century. Dr. Sevitzky, music director and conductor of the UM Symphony, has been planning the presentation of "Joan of Arc at the Stake" for more than a year.
Well, What?
Gables Lion Joe C. Morris is recently returned from a club trip to Lima, Peru, and reports thusly: "It was a good trip which 21 Lions took together. I happened to be the only one from the Gables club who could go. "The thing that impressed me most was a press conference we had in Lima where all 21 of us were lined up. The reporters kept asking us, 'What are you Lions doing to combat communism?' "It was a disturbing question."
