whatever happened to ... Plans for W. Dade center?

On Jan. 15, 1975, The Times/Guide reported that designs were being drawn up for a new West Dade Government Center, to be located on the north side of Coral Way and 94th Court. The Coral Gables architectural firm of Ferendino, Grafton, Spillis, and Candella had been awarded a contract for the design and they wanted to "make the total project fit into the surrounding neighborhood," according to Julio Gabriel, architect for the firm. Now, out of three buildings, the first building of the complex, the library, has been designed. The building was let out for bids Aug. 4, according to Mitch Alvarez, project architect for the job. The government complex will be "low rise, two story, with a soft silhouette. It won't be a tightly developed site and there will be open spaces with greenery around the building," Alvarez said. The second building to be designed will be a court and office building, and the third will be a police building.

Before you think about putting up your CB base antenna, make sure you've got your signals straight. To begin with, Citizen Band antennas, unlike TV antennas, are under FCC regulations. FCC and local rules sometimes differ on the allowable height. So, before erecting your antenna, check with the appropriate authorities. And when you're ready to put it up, check on one other thing - the clearance. The slightest touch of your antenna or guy wire to a power line could cause you a serious shock. Here's how to play it safe. Make sure that you check all directions. In other words, not only the space above the antenna but all around. So, if your antenna should happen to fall, it won't happen to fall onto a power line. How far away is safe? Certainly a distance no less than the height of the mast. This safety rule not only goes for CB antennas but TV antennas as well. Or any metal pole for that matter. And here's another word of caution; even when using guy wires to raise or lower your antenna you can't be assured of positive control. So, better double check the clearance. So many people are now tuning into CB that we thought you should also be tuned into the necessary safety requirements. This safety message has been brought to you by Florida Power and Light as a public service. Because serving the public is really what we're here for.
