8 ball, side pocket
Billiards and bowling seem to be a popular combination at the brand new Don Carter Kendale Lanes facility on North Kendall at SW 137th Avenue. Seventy-two lanes, 20 pool tables, an electronic game room, lounge and snack bar are teamed to form what just may be the largest recreation center in Florida.

Prep rivals now college teammates
After spending three years as neighborhood rivals in South Dade, freshmen John Bow and Luis Lopez have become teammates on the University of Kentucky football team. Bow, a Columbus High All-Dade defensive back, and Lopez, a defensive end from Coral Park, lived across the street from each other and competed against each other during their high school playing days and now both have gained varsity status on the Wildcat squad. Joining Bow and Lopez at Kentucky are freshmen Rick Jaffe and Chris Jacobs from Coral Gables High, along with Killian's Mike O'Donnell. Jaffe and Jacobs anchored Gables' stubborn defensive unit, which was one of the best in Dade. Jaffe, a middle guard, broke a school defensive record (98 tackles and 58 assists) that was set by Ralph Ortega, now with the Atlanta Falcons. Jacobs was considered the quickest defensive back in the county. O'Donnell was a powerful running back at Killian and gained the reputation of a strong runner.
