Men's room draws police attention
From Page 1 Some other place must have just been cleaned up, because where we used to have no problem, we've had a problem created." When offenders are arrested, the officer said, they are usually cooperative with police. There have been no cases of violence connected with the arrests. Aside from invoking criminal penalties, Koronkiewicz said, judges occasionally recommend psychiatric counseling. One South Dade psychiatrist (who would not let his name be used because of American Medical Association strictures against publicity for physicians) agreed to comment on the Gables arrests. He has often served as an expert witness in courts trying sex offend- "These men are driven by impulses beyond their control," the doctor said. "Once these impulses occur they can't stop, even if they know they are in danger of being caught." The physchiatrist explained that for some exhibitionists "the need for instant gratification is stronger than fear. These are people in an emotional state with a long-time profile of sex offenses. For every time you apprehend someone, there are 100 times he has done the same thing without being caught." The doctor, who says that some of these people may go on to commit more serious sex offenses, explained that their problems begin early in life. "Many of them grew up with no strong father figure," the psychiatrist said. "A father acts as an individual who instills conscience. Those without apparent fathering — due to divorce, abandonment, drinking, overwork, or whatever reason — lack conscience and sexual identity. They have to prove they are men and they prove it in childish ways. They are still trying to find a sexual identity. "Once we recognize these people," he said, "we should be sure they get treatment. If left to themselves they won't seek help because to them, this is not abnormal behavior." The doctor said the sign in the bus terminal restroom actually provokes those "for whom punishment does something. They need to be caught and be the center of attention. It makes them feel important. "It is important to get across to people that these offenders must get treatment," he concluded. ERICA MEYER
