Make your own blazer to complete fall wardrobe
needles and pins . . . nadine wright Blazers are one of the most important looks for fall, and sewing your own will certainly save you a lot of money as well as give you a super new look. But, even if you can't sew or have only just learned, you can consider these helpful tips before sewing or shoping for the blazer best suited to your figure. Figure tips SHORT FIGURE: Choose a blazer that is well fitted. Avoid a very long jacket, as it will emphasize a short figure. Vertical lines will give the illusion of added height. TALL FIGURE: Choose a blazer that is medium to long in length. It should cover your seat. Look for horizontal interest, such as wide lapels, pockets, and yoke detail. You can choose nubby textures, bright colors, and bold stripes. FULL FIGURE: Look for easy fitting, an unfussy silhouette, curved, diagonal or vertical lines, high armholes, and high shoulders. Avoid vivid colors or shiny fabrics and large prints. BIG HIPS: Avoid details such as pockets in this area, and have the hemline of the jacket end below the widest part of the hips. Avoid vents. BIG BOSOM: Avoid detail in this area and choose a single-breasted pattern. SMALL WAIST: Choose a jacket with a waistline seam. THICK WAIST: Choose a jacket with vertical darts or princess seams. BROAD SHOULDERS: Avoid princess seams that curve to the armhole at the bust; Also avoid gathered sleeves; the regular smooth cap of the set-in sleeve draws less attention to shoulders. Fitting tips Balance and proportion: The blazer length must relate to what you plan to wear with it. When you fit, it, try it on with the skirt or pants you will use with it most. A blazer worn mostly with pants should be a bit longer than one worn with a skirt. The standard sleeve length is approximately five inches above the tip of your thumb. This should leave a half inch of your shirt cuff showing. The right front laps over the left and must conceal its lower edge. The underlap of the back vent must also be hidden. Mark the position of the top buttonhole where the lapels begin to roll, and gauge the others accordingly. Pocket placement and size give the final balance to the silhouette. Pin them on while trying on the jacket. They should be equidistant from the hem and center front.
