When Schafer looks back on his years of tire-less radio listening and TV viewing, a few favor-ite bloopers stand out in his mind. Like the time a news announcer, reporting on Richard Nixon, said: "The rumor that the President would veto the bill came from high White Horse Souses." Or the unforgettable moment when Miami tele-vision news director Ralph Renick was closing a strong editorial dealing with wasteful duplication of tasks within local gov-ernment. The editorial a was flawless until the bit-ter end, when Renick em-phasized: "If Dade County government is to finan-cially survive, it must do away with this dupeless needlacation." Schafer, a perfectionist at heart, is determined to record as many bloopers as possible that slip past station managements — but he is only one man. To help in the monumen-tal task he has enlisted millions of TV and radio enthusiasts across the U.S. to watch for humor-ous mistakes and let him know. "It is their duty to cap-ture broadcasting bum-bles. Once they report a blooper to me at Blooper Headquarters in Miami, they receive membership in the 'Blooper-Snooper Club,' duly signed by me as Super Blooper Snoop-er," he said. "Their eyes and ears be-come pledged to the fine art of blooper-snooping." The Blooper King has become so popular over the years that he has been asked to produce a series of educational films and recordings for distribu-tion to school speech de-partments, which will ex-periment with a new con-cept of combining learn-ing with entertainmnet. In addition, a number of high schools and colleges use his albums and books as teaching tools, and the King himself is a much sought-after personality on the college lecture cir-cuit.
