He sets aside dentist drill to take winning photographs

Two years ago, Dr. William M. Schiff, a Coral Gables dentist, visited the colonial town of Williamsburg, Va., and took photographs of a man making a lute. More recently, Schiff used his photographic talents to capture the image of a Florida Power and Light lineman at work behind his Coral Gables home. Although the two photographs are different in many ways, they were both winning entries in a unique photo contest designed to pay tribute to the American worker. Schiff's photo study of a man making a lute won the local area first prize in the photo contest called "A Salute to the American Worker," co-sponsored by Manpower, Inc., and Minolta Corp. A resident of Dade County since 1938 and of Coral Gables since 1951, Schiff first became involved in the art of photography 28 years ago. "I first got into photography after a camera was given to me right before my first child was born, and she is now 27-years-old," said Schiff. "But I didn't get involved seriously until 15 years ago when I bought my first good camera." Schiff's photographs were among hundreds entered in the contest by photographers of all ages. Entries ranged from classics such as firemen, welders, and railroad track crews, to blacksmiths and potters. The photograph of the lute maker at the tourist town of Williamsburg, although taken two years before the contest, fit the contest rules. The only problem for Schiff was locating the instrument maker in the colonial town in order to enter the competition. "At first I had no idea if it was possible to find the man in the picture," said Schiff. "But I made a phone call and since I had a good description of him I was connected. Of course, he didn't remember me, since hundreds of people must take his photograph, but he signed the release form I needed to enter the contest." Schiff, who has won several other photo contests, is now taking a course at Miami-Dade Junior College with his wife, Trudi, to learn darkroom procedure. In 1972, Schiff won the first prize locally and an honorable mention nationally in a Canada Dry "Picture America Beautiful" contest. His winning entry in that contest was a photograph of the Merced River in Yosemite National Park in California. Last year he received an honorable mention for his photograph of three deers feeding in Canada, entitled "Having Lunch with Friends." "I have great fun entering contests," said Schiff. "The three photographs that have won have been taken while on tours, but I have lots of nature photos shot right here in South Florida." The Schiffs, who live at 136 Candia Ave., in Coral Gables, often work together setting up the composition of scenes. He will receive a Minolta SR-T 200 camera for his latest first prize winning entry. — ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Photo by ELIZABETH OWEN Dr. William Schiff focuses on workers for subjects
