City folk, students plan UM pep rally

The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and residents of the City Beautiful will join with students of the University of in a pep rally to "Support the Hurricanes" on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 8 p.m. The rally will be at the athletic field at University Park, behind the Coral Gables Youth Center on University and Riviera Drives. The pep rally is part of the Chamber's "Support the Hurricanes" campaign, which began in late August. In addition to the rally, the Chamber of Commerce and its University Relations Committee are coordinating a Football Fun Night for the opening game against Florida State on Sept. 18. The Coral Gables City Commission has declared Sept. 13-16 as "Support the Hurricanes Week" in Coral Gables. Among those planning to attend the pep rally are Dr. Henry King Stanford, UM president, Pete Elliot, athletic director and Head Coach Carl Selmer, as well as the Hurricane football team, cheerleaders, the school's marching band, majorettes and Ibis mascots. Another part of the campaign has been the decoration of Coral Gables businesses with banners and posters urging the support of the UM football team.
