Horse show a highlight of week's activities
Horse buffs are invited to watch the action at the annual Fraternal Order of Police Horse Show Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Tropical Park Equestrian Center, Bird Road and the Palmetto Expressway. The first events will begin at 9 a.m. Equestrians of all ages can enter bare-back, English, western and halter events in the morning competition. The afternoon events include cloverleaf, hairpin, straight barrels and other races. Entry fee for judged events are $3.50, for timed events, $3, and for jackpot events, $4. Entrants register on Saturday morning and must show a negative Coggins report for all horses entered. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded. Participants and spectators alike can enjoy the barbecue lunch and the bluegrass sounds of Ernie Martin and his Country Cowboys. The show is sponsored by the Miami-State Law Enforcement Lodge No. 78 if the F. O. P. Broadway hit The smash Broadway musical hit "Bubbling Brown Sugar" will open in low-price preview showings starting Sept. 14 at the Coconut Grove Playhouse, 3500 Main Highway. The musical fantasy tour of Harlem night life will play an unlimited exclsuive engagement, with regular price showings starting Sept. 18. Tickets for "Bubbling Brown Sugar" are on sale now at the Playhouse. For information and reservations call 442-4000. Grove dancing To kick off a schedule of classes and performances, Dance Foundation will present the Grove Dance Theatre in performances this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10 and 11, at 8 p.m. at 3043 Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove. Dindi Lidge of the Toronto Dance Theatre choreographed the studio performances and will appear as guest artist. For reservations call 445-6170. Season Spotlight Season tickets are now on sale for Spotlight Theater South's 1976-77 season. Shows scheduled are "The Odd Couple", "Monique", "Children's Hour" and a musical to be announced. Plant show The first annual Tropical Gloxinia and Gesneriad Show will be held this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11 and 12, at Fairchild Tropical Gardens, 10901 Old Cutler Road, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Plant entries will be accepted Sept. 9 and 10 at Fairchild Tropical Gardens. Call 667-1651 for information. Admission to the show which includes admission to Fairchild Gardens, is $2 for adults. Children under 16 are admitted free. Local artists A free exhibition of photographs and paintings by local black artists in scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11 at the Black Arts Workshop, 3739 Grand Ave., Coconut Grove, from 6 p.m. All exhibited art will be on sale. Jazz buffs Jazz and classical music buffs can enjoy the sounds of the Miami Chamber Trio at a free concert at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12 at the First Unitarian Church, 7701 SW 76th Ave. The program includes trio sonatas by Bach and Carl Maria von Weber, and the Claude Bolling composition "Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano." The program is sponsored by Performing Arts for Community and Education (PACE). Free concerts The Dade County Parks and Recreation Department presents the Billion Dollar Band at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, in a free concert at Goulds Park, SW 114th Avenue. Three musical groups will perform in a free City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department concert Wednesday, Sept. 15 at Peacock Park, McFarland Road, in Coconut Grove at 1 p.m. Carmen Lundy and Nimbus, Cafe and Time Machine will entertain. Youth symphony Robert P. Bobo, musical director for the Youth Symphony of Dade County and director of the Dade County Schools' production of "1776", will hold auditions for the Youth Symphony Sept. 9 through 16. All instrumentalists from grades seven to 12 in Dade County's public and private schools are invited to audition. Membership is open without audition to all students who participated in last year's Youth Symphony. The audition scheduled for the South Dade area is Friday, Sept. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Southwest Miami High School Instrumental Room. Local guitarist Harry Volpe, a local guitarist who performs at the David William Hotel in Coral Gables, is featured guest artist at the 59th free family concert sponsored by the City of Coral Gables. The concert, under the direction of Roy Oliver, will be held at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center, 400 Anastasia Ave., at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12. Johnny Violin and Ray Matty, violinist and mandolist respectively, will also be featured. Singer Lisa Di Milo and the 21st Century Strings will also perform. UM music Three concerts are scheduled this week by the University of Miami School of Music at Gusman Concert Hall. On Friday, Sept. 10, a free senior recital by Rosy Sackstein, a flutist, is scheduled for 8 p.m. A free piano recital, featuring senior student Elizabeth Lightheart, will be offered Saturday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. Eyda and Elier Suarez, a brother-sister piano duo, will perform Sunday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. as part of the Alumni Artist Series. Tickets are $2.50 for the public, free to UM students. For more information call 284-6477. Sculptured dancer Fifteen new sculptures by internationally renowned sculptor Manue Carbonell will be on display in the New Gallery at the Metropolitan Museum and Art Center through Sunday, Sept. 12.
Mik Groninger, Christine Nield-Jaffe and Michael Scherperel will present a free concert this Sunday, Sept. 12 at the First Unitarian Church.
