Rader Report Criticized More Letters From Readers
EDITOR: Why all this to do about our "Image" as envisioned by the Africans and the Asians? I am sure the innocuous onus put on some of our people by the Northern and Southern whites is nothing compared to wholesale rape and murder committed by the savages in Africa and Asia at the drop of an Independence. They don't seem to worry about their Image in our eyes. Frankly, I am much more worried about what our European friends and counterparts in the civilized world, our only true allies, think of us, and I wonder how long they are going to hold still for our silly flirtations with all these miniscule and lawless nonentities. I can't help wondering if our Image is not more directed to the Negro vote in this country than to anything but hypocracy in the United Nations. WM. WYATT NOLTING 241 Romano Ave. EDITOR: As a neophyte Gableite I strongly protest the Rader Report and its delineated "Progress." I have seen progress such as proposed. I'm against it. What qualifications does Rader Association have to tell Coral Gables what to do? Have them name one other city they have experimented on and let us see what the results have been. They said everything was based on facts. Their facts were limited to a very few categories and therefore the report is worse than no report at all. I contend they are unqualified to replan Coral Gables. They should have paid Coral Gables for the privilege of making the survey. Just the threat of such changes may unfortunately make them come to pass. I bough in Coral Gables because I thought it was the best city in Florida and was assured by the real estate experts that any zoning changes or variances was unheard of in Coral Gables. Needless to say, these realtors were conspicuous by their absence at the June 4 meeting. I asked at the meeting what "progress" was going to do to Bird Road? They did not know because that was up to the county. Then why make any specific recommendations on the perimeter of Bird? J. C. BIDWELL 227 Velarde Ave. EDITOR: Your editorial on the granting of license to Al Singer's University Inn was very good. If any liquor licenses are to be issued, certainly his business establishment qualified. It is ridiculous that the Commissioners should suggest that it be decided by a referendum. We, the public, appreciate your bringing these things to light. Keep up the good work. A. J. LAKE 546 Majorea Ave. EDITOR: You asked for opinions regarding the issuance of a license to sell liquor in the University Court resort motel. As a citizen of Coral Gables, the injustice of the situation is rankling. The ordinance, as written, stipulates only a hotel of 100 rooms or more, with all rooms leading to a central lobby, would qualify. Until this time, there has been no such hotel. Now, Mr. Gaines had designed and is preparing to build his operation to comply with this ordinance. He will be issued a liquor license. The law grants him this right. Mr. Singer had no such motives when he designed and named his business of one hundred sixty rooms (160). Call it as you may, he has made the Inn a resort of refinement that can be recommended with pride. Why, then, should his request for a license to meet this new competition be denied and the Commission suggest he seek a referendum? If Mr. Gaines is granted this license, Mr. Singer, a man of proven reputation in the community, must be protected. I. E. NEWTON 6301 Maggiore St. EDITOR: Your editorial in today's Times anent the negative attitude on the part of the City Commission in refusing to grant a liquor license to the University Inn is to be commended. Mr. Singer has erected at great cost one of the finest and best-run hotels in the area, catering to the tourists, families of University of Miami students and guests of the local families. Now, a Johnny-come-lately, will build another Inn close by and without a "by your leave," the City Commission has agreed to grant them a liquor license. The members of the City Commission can pass an ordinance amending the liquor laws without the added expense of over $1,000.00 of the taxpayers' money for a referendum vote. We have been residents of Coral Gables for 18 years, and live near the University Inn, and we feel that it will make better public relations with the visitors to our City if they are able to have their aperitif at the inn without leaving the city limits. SAMUEL AND ELIZABETH DREYER 6305 Castenada St. EDITOR: In regard to the matter of the University Court Motel being denied a liquor permit I would like to express myself as being in favor of their being accepted as a hotel under the present ruling. Mr. Singer's establishment reflects credit on our community as a reputable and attractive business and I feel he should be able to compete on an equal basis with other forthcoming hotels (motels) that are being just now introduced into our city.
