10 Cavs in Advanced Math

By LEE SANDLER Correspondent Ten junior students from Coral Gables High have been selected to participate in the Cooperative College and School Science Program in Mathematics during 1962-63. These students will be required to take a trigonometry course in high school and then permitted to take advanced courses not ordinarily offered high school students. Those who have been selected are Steven Alter, Calvert Bullock, William Christiansen, Richard Fisher, Norton Greenfield; Geoffrey Joseph, Brian Krupp, Samuel Matthews, Bennett Stern and Mark Weiss. LANGUAGE Awards for outstanding foreign language students were presented last week. Margaret Krell won the French award. In the German competition David Rimland was named the outstanding second year student and N. Joe Potts was named the top third year student. Valedictorian Jack Catlin was presented with the outstanding Latin student award and Marilu Garcia took the same award for Spanish. The outstanding second year student was Steven Scherer and Stephen Dubrow, the Silver Knight winner in foreign language, was the top third year student. ELECTIONS Future Teachers of America recently held elections for next year's officers. Those who will serve are Mary Dubois, president; Ingrid Skow, vice president. National Honor Society held its annual banquet at the Pan American Recreation Club. Those who were elected to offices at the banquet are Geoffrey Joseph, president; Richard Fisher, vice president. Dirigimus Hi-Y's officers for next year are Bill Christiansen, president; Rick Hay, vice president; Rick Culver, treasurer; Bill Downey and Don Frantz, secretaries. George Rosell, historian; Alan Denchfield, parliamentarian; Nielson Rogers, sergeant-at-arms; and Bill Allen, chaplain. New Future Officers are Janet Powell, president; Susan Porter, vice president; Babs Falting, secretary, and Linda Brooks, treasurer. Joy Lucke was named the Future Nurse of the Year at the same banquet. ENGLISH Miss M. C. Ions announced the top students in the English department on June 5. A total of five awards were made. Normally no more than two are given in one year. Those who were cited for their outstanding contributions and accomplishments in English are Barry Boyer, Jack Catlin, Howard Ehrlichman, James Mensch and Sandra Lucas. Denise Most was presented a book at the same time, signifying first place in the annual poetry contest sponsored at Gables High. The contest is named after the club's poet laureate, Mrs. Mabel M. Staats.

GETS CROSS APPROVED

First Methodist Church of South Miami got approval from the Coral Gables City Commission Tuesday to build a tower and cross having a total height of 68 feet.

Kononoff-Smith Design Garage

Kononoff and Smith, a Coral Gables engineering firm has been selected by the City Commission to design the proposed Municipal two-story parking garage behind the Miracle Building. The firm, headed by Alexis B. Kononoff, was chosen from among a group of other firms that had presented proposals to the Commission.
